At the Branch
Cadets reviewed, given awards
By Jo -Ann McDonald
What at week at the Brussels
Legion Branch! It has kept everyone
busy with jobs.
The fish fry crew was busy with
three dinners last week. The first one
was in Atwood at the Atwood
Presbyterian Church where the crew
fed 260 hungry folks. The crew
included Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Deb Ross, Kim and
Cam Ross, Lisa Glanville and Joan
Smith with Jamie Mitchell dropping
by to help.
The second fry was in Wroxeter
for the Wroxeter Hall Board and the
crew fed 150 people. A smaller crew
was on hand including Judy Lee,
Greg Wilson, George Adams, Deb
Ross and Eric Ross arriving to help
load up at the end of the night.
The third fry was in Hensall at the
arena for the Hensall Legion. The
150 diners were looked after by
crew members Sandra and Catrina
Josling, Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Glenn Bridge and
Deb Ross. It was a lot of fish to thaw
for the week by Deb Cann and Jo-
Ann McDonald with almost 1,200
fillets used in the week. Great job
everyone!
The Cadets held their year-end fun
night with a barbecue and games.
They are now off for the summer,
although many will go to Camp
Borden for summer training. Some
stay for three or six weeks and some
train as officers with a stipend for
their efforts.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
was handled by Glenn Bridge and
Deb Cann. There were 13 -and -a -half
tables of players. Winners were:
high, Joan and Mary, 78; second,
Norm and Wayne, 76; third, Frank
and Betty Hulley, 75; lone hands,
Anne Laidlaw and Joyce Hodgins;
low, tied, Bonnie and Nancy Turner
and Wayne and Betty Ann Smith.
Euchre is every two weeks.
The Sunday night dance had the
music of the Crippled Duck band. It
was a hot night with a smaller crowd
of approximately 60 people to
have plenty of room on the dance
floor.
The John Heaman band will
perform at the Legion in two weeks.
Ryan Jacklin is doing so well
again this year and has come home
with three gold medals from the
Legion District C Track and Field
competition held in Kitchener on the
weekend.
Congratulations Ryan!

By the book, summer doesn't
arrive until next week, but the heat of
the day on Sunday spoke loud and
clear that summer had arrived — so
no complaining. It made summer
plans easy to think about — camp,
weddings, parties, gardens, theatre,
family.
The ball parks were busy spots on
Saturday as players of all the ages
took up the challenge to play some
good ball games and celebrate the
teamwork involved.
We did our first camping stint last
week at Inverhuron Provincial Park.
Situated between Kincardine and
Port Elgin, with Lake Huron access
and wild flowers in full bloom — iris,
columbine and ladies slipper — it was
a very nice spot to spend some
leisure time.
The park opened in the 1950s, but
was closed for a time when heavy
water production at Douglas Point
was a concern. Now it is once again
a popular spot with good trails, nice
campsites and Lake Huron. There is
something about waves lapping on
the shore that is very relaxing and
from our spot, we could hear and see
the lake.
When we think about life, we
remember the people who were part
of our past. So when old friends call
or when someone dies, our
memories move into action.
Attending Hank TenPas' goodbye
service in Listowel last week had me
reviewing life in Brussels over
several decades and how Hank's life
overlapped mine and many others.
We all have a story or two with Hank
involved, so be sure to share them
with Aggie as the reality of life
without Hank settles in.
Nursing was a great influence on
my life and three girls I met in 1967
have remained important as the years
go by. A call reporting that Dagi is
coming from British Columbia got
the rest of us moving and a gathering
is settled. Memories of teenage
student nurses now make me shake
my head, but it's a good shake that
gets more fun stories moving. So I'm
waiting impatiently for the gold
stories to begin.
It's time to get your tickets for the
Blyth Festival. The variety of subject
matter should have at least one show
you need to see. Opening night is
fast approaching.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
