Sparling honoured by national propane association
Lifetime achievement award
Former Sparling's Propane President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steven Sparling was
recently honoured by the Canadian Propane Association for his work within the industry.
Outgoing association chair Guy Marchand presented Sparling with a Lifetime Achievement
Award earlier this month. (Photo submitted)
Steven Sparling, long-time
president and CEO of Sparling's
Propane in Blyth, won the 2016
Lifetime Achievement Award for the
Canadian Propane Association.
Sparling received his award at the
association's gala dinner last week.
According to the association's
outgoing Chair Guy Marchand, who
presented Sparling with his award,
under Sparling, the company
enjoyed record growth leading to it
being one of the largest in Canada
until its sale to Parkland Fuel
Corporation in 2013. Sparling
retired from Parkland in 2016.
During his time in the industry,
Sparling was the founding Chair of
the Ontario Propane Association and
founding Chair of the Canadian
Propane Association Board of
Directors where he continued to
advocate for industry performance
standards and a culture of safety.
Sparling grew up in the industry,
from working as a teen painting
propane tanks at Sparling's Propane
to being the CEO of the company
decades later.
The inaugural Canadian Propane
Association Lifetime Achievement
Award had been awarded to Grant
Sparling, Steven's father and
Sparling's Propane founder.

outside the three rooms that were on
stage," he said. "From a filming
standpoint, the idea of limiting
everything to a small space had a
claustrophobic feeling."
Johnston next steered the
discussion towards the hot -button
issue of cultural appropriation,
which is a theme in the film and,
according to Potter, an issue that
members of The Farm Show
collective struggled with.
"It's an important discussion," he
said. "We asked ourselves if we had
a right to tell these stories."
The last question that Johnston put
to Potter, Perez Torres and Armour -
Ostroff before audience members
could ask questions, was how it felt
to work with a subject matter that
wasn't just a play, but a cultural
mythos.
Armour -Ostroff said it was
something that she knew had to be
lived up to, but working with
something historical was made more
interesting by having people
involved those historic pieces of
drama available.
The film will now make the
festival circuit later this year.
