(Shawn Loughlin photo) McGavin marks 80th birthday What a great week, or at least five days of good weather, for the farmers. Lots of soybeans were planted, some very late corn and the hay has started to come off. Manure is being spread and for some, they are cleaning up equipment to be put away. According to the experts, corn acreage is down and soys and white beans will be up this year. The Walton Hall is looking better with the flowerbeds done. Money was raised last year to redo the beds and now with the International Plowing Match headquarters there, they are looking good. Judy Lee and Rick and Jo -Ann McDonald spent the day on Saturday building up the beds with dirt and peat moss, trimming the tree and then planting the beds. Many folks stopped to say they were looking good, but Mary Bernard stopped and helped with the planting. Thanks Mary! We were getting weary after six hours of digging, shovelling and planting. There is a bit more to do, but it will get done in time. There were plenty of folks dropping into McGavins on Thursday to wish Neil McGavin a happy 80th birthday. Approximately 400 people dropped in to see Neil, extend birthday greetings, hear a joke and enjoy a piece of cake. It was a busy and noisy place and the workers had a hard time staying working and not enjoying the music and storytelling. Congrats to Neil. Congrats to both Neil and Marie on celebrating 55 years of marriage the next day. After a long day on Thursday they quietly enjoyed the next day! Here's a great way to celebrate an 80th birthday. Shelley Smith's father turned 80 and the family organized a tour of her father, Bob O'Brown's life. The group of 25 boarded a bus in Seaforth and then travelled to Aylmer to pick up more family and friends. They then struck out on a tour of Bob's life going back through the years to where he was born and the first house he bought and other places memorable to him. They ended back at the Aylmer Legion where more people greeted Bob and shared some stories and cake. They boarded the bus for the return to Seaforth and had great food, lots of laughs and some oldie but goldie tunes. Bob really enjoyed his special day and had the time of his life. What a great idea! The Brussels Lions Club had its very successful Elimination Draw on Saturday night with a sold -out crowd as usual. A great meal and entertainment was enjoyed by all. Folks who really enjoyed it from Walton included early bird winners Bruno and Joyce Braecker and Saturday night winners, the Mitchell kids, John and Pat Gillis, Jim and Danica McNichol and Ken and Anne Williamson because they were winners during the night. Walton did not have as many winners this year as they have in the past, but there is always next year! Time is slipping by and those who are entering the barn quilt or beautification aspects of the IPM need to get busy. Entries must be received by the end of the month. The month of June will fly by and there are only 15 days of school left. Basically three more weeks, but PA days and fun days make it seem much shorter! The village of Brussels has lost one of the most respected, community -conscious citizens this past week. Our sympathies are extended to the Ten Pas family on the passing of Henk Ten Pas. He will be missed by his wife of almost 56 years, Aggie and their children Patricia, Paul and Linda and their families. He will be mourned by the Ten Pas and Van Veen families. Henk came to Canada when he was about 16 years old. He worked alongside his father in the carpentry and cabinet-making business and became a carpenter for his life's work. Henk was always interested and became involved in municipal government and served as a councillor for many years and eventually the Reeve of Brussels in 1986/1987. He served on Huron County Council for a time and enjoyed all aspects of municipal government. He loved to go on mission trips and went to Africa, Brazil and Chile, putting his carpentry skills to work to help others in need. Even after retirement, Henk kept up with all that went on in Brussels. He attended many public meetings, voiced his thoughts and concerns and always was looking ahead to what would be best for Brussels. Lately, he was appointed honorary foreman of the Four Winds Barn project, and would drop by to watch its progress everyday. He always took pride in his surroundings and loved to have his family around. A wonderful man that will be missed by many. Our condolences to the Ten Pas family. Celebrating birthdays this past week include Scott Henderson, Neil McGavin, Kyle Pryce, Patricia Andrades, Ernie Lewington, Scott Dalton, Jillian Houston, Amanda McClure, Merle Hackwell, Sarah Tipple, Jacob McGavin, Sharon Stephenson, Kennedy Strong, MacKenzie Strong and Ashley Williamson. Happy birthday to all. PAGE 9. Jacklin gets gold at track and field event PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Congratulations to former Walton resident and now Belgrave boy, Ryan Jacklin. Everyone is so proud of him and his talent in track and field. Ryan participated in Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) held in Belleville on the weekend and did fantastic. Ryan won two gold medals — one in javelin and one in shot put — and captured a bronze medal in discus. Ryan is ranked third in Ontario and he has only been competing for two years. He is training very hard and loves the events and competition. Congratulations to Ryan and his parents Dave and Kandace, who are behind him all the way! Congratulations to Karen Bridge who celebrated a special birthday this past week. She gathered with girlfriends Liz Sholdice, Alice Marks, Edith Pipe, Hope Lowe and Sharon Evans for a lovely lunch and day at the Clinton casino. Hopefully turning 70 brought her some luck that day! Jeff and Shannon McGavin have returned from Nova Scotia after attending the graduation of Jacob from Mount Allison University. He has completed four years at school and will be working in Halifax for the summer before continuing his studies to become a doctor. Pat and Cathy Melady have returned from New Brunswick after attending the graduation of their daughter Shayna from Dalhousie University. She received her Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and will be home working in Ontario. Back in familiar territory for his yearly visit is Neil Turnbull from Calgary. He spends two weeks here every year around this time to look into his affairs in Ontario. He always attends the Lions Elimination Draw so gets a chance to visit with folks he has known.
