Madill Secondary School's Ryan Jacklin has returned triumphant from the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Championships over the weekend in Belleville. Jacklin earned gold medals in Midget Boys shot put and discus and a bronze medal in Midget Boys javelin. Fellow Madill athletes Brooke Jez and Hanna VanStuyvenberg also performed well, earning gold in the Midget Girls 3,000 -metre race and silver in the Midget Girls discus competition. In total, five athletes from Madill, competed at the championship after earning berths through the West regional qualifier late last month. The qualifiers featured competition from high schools throughout western and midwestern Ontario qualify. At the regional meet, only the top four competitors in each event qualify for the Ontario high school championships Jacklin, to earn his way to OFSSAA, earned three first -place finishes. He put the shot 17.12 metres, only three centimetres off his personal best. He then hurled the javelin 51.85 metres, a new personal best, and threw the discus for another personal best of 50.86 metres to set new Madill benchmarks in both events. Jez claimed a third place finish in the Midget Girls 1,500 -metre race in a new personal best time of 4:50.21. In the final day of competition, Jez ran confidently to win the 3,000 - metre event in, 10:28.96, a new record for the school. Also competing in the Midget division, Jaime Newell had her best leap of the season, jumping 10.34 metres to claim fourth and another qualifying spot for OFSAA. In the throwing circles, VanStuyvenberg continued her success in discus with a third place finish throw of 27.90 metres. The 4x100 -metre Midget Girls relay team of Meghan Ash, Emma Jackson, Jaime Newell and Hannah Bloemberg connected smoothly on their exchanges and managed a finishing time of 53.14 seconds, a half -second faster than their previous best. Austin Eadie, in Midget Boys triple jump, set an new personal best with a jump of 12.99 metres. All the Madill athletes who competed performed well achieving eight personal bests and one relay team best.
