The Citizen
The Brussels Farmers' Market
opened its 2017 season with 19
vendors which organizer Rene
Richmond says is a good start to the
season.
Now in its sixth year, the market
takes over the lot on the corner of
Turnberry and Market Streets every
Friday starting the Victoria Day
weekend in May.
While it typically runs later into
the shoulder seasons, this year,
Richmond explained, the market
will close at the beginning of
September due to the numerous
community events near Brussels,
including the annual reunion of the
Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby
Association in Blyth and the
International Plowing Match in
Walton.
"The market is going great,"
Richmond said. "The vendors are

The annual Barn Dance Jamboree took over the Blyth and
District Community Centre and adjacent campground over
the weekend and filled the community with classic country
music fans. Saturday night was the big show, including
special performances by many well-known Barn Dance
musicians. Above, Gerald Davidson was dressed to the

great. They all fill a need and they
are a great group of like-minded
people who appreciate the fact that
the market is here."
Richmond said there are staples of
the market, such as fruits and
vegetables, maple products, hand-
made items and flowers, but added
that no two weeks are the same when
it comes to what is available.
"There are vendors who won't be
here one week, but someone else
will be," she said.
New this year are two draws
designed to encourage shoppers at
the market to help fund the musical
entertainment at the site.
The organizers of the market have
started a 50/50 draw every week that
will fund the music that occurs at the
site and a weekly vendor draw has
also been implemented.
"The vendor draw will see people
who purchase items from vendors
fill out a ticket," Richmond said. "A
winner will be drawn each week and
invited to come back the next week
and claim their prize: something
small from each of the vendors
present that week."
The food booth has also been a
success so far this year, Richmond
said, as the list of available slots for
community groups to run and benefit
from the booth is already nearly full.
She said there were only four spots
left across the remaining 14 market
days of the season.
Music at the market is handled by
Don Chesher who has already put
together an entire summer of acts.
The season opened with Pipe Major
Donald Martin and the Brussels
Legion Pipe and Drum Band on May
19. The group will also close out the
final market on Sept. 1.
Last week, Clare French and the
Mitchell Legion Band played their
brass and woodwinds and on June 2,
Marilyn Scott and members of the
Mayfair Ukulele Band will be on
hand.
Chesher's own band, Don and
Dale and the Just Fun five -piece
band are scheduled once, as is fellow
local musician Adam Cousins.
The Hilliers are set to play one
weekend, as is Louise Poirier,
another Brussels talent who plays
guitar and sounds like Patsy Cline,
according to Chesher.
Leona Konings and the
Serenaders, a four -piece band from
Listowel are also included.
John Watson, a Brussels native,
and his band from the Kitchener -
Waterloo area, will play twice as will
Gary Boyle from London, an
international musician, and Glen
Hodgins, a Huron County talent who
sings and plays banjo and guitar.
Paul Dockstader and the Irish
Cowboys are also scheduled.
