Roof making progress at Brussels Four Winds Barn Getting there With the cedar shingles now firmly in place, the path has been laid to construct the steel roof of the Brussels Four Winds Barn, which has made significant contruction progress since the frame first went up several weeks ago. The shingles are crucial to the vision of Bryan Morton, who is behind the project, so that those inside the barn have that feeling of being in a century - old barn. (Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The Four Winds Barn in Brussels, as anyone who has driven by recently knows, is coming along rapidly as the structure's roof is being built. Barb Terpstra, who has been working closely with the project and its facilitator Bryan Morton since the project began, says it's exciting to see the progress being made on a daily basis. Last week, crews were working to put cedar shingles on the roof of the barn, which will serve almost as an interior barn roof facade to ensure authenticity for guests inside the building. Terpstra says that Morton wanted those inside the barn to feel as though they were in a 100 -year- old barn. However, to ensure that the Almost time to play North Woods Elementary School's much anticipated new playground is in the process of being constructed and should be complete by the end of the week. The project is being undertaken by EarthScape, which constructs playgrounds in an environmentally -sustainable fashion. The playground will also be accessible to all and connect to the school's lauded Environmental Learning Grounds. Between the cedar and steel will be the fire safety sprinkler system and all of the pipes associated with it. Terpstra says that she and Morton expect that the cedar shingles will soon be complete and that the steel roof will be up within the next few weeks. The actual Four Winds structure is just the first step in an ambitious plan to revitalize Brussels, beginning with one large piece of the puzzle. Terpstra says that the main barn structure's upper level will serve as a wedding venue and event space, something that is needed in Brussels. On the lower level of the barn will be the year-round home of the Brussels Farmers' Market, which, Terpstra hopes will result in the market being open two or three days a week, no matter the season. The structure's smaller building, the "stable" located closer to the Brussels main street, will house a bakery and cafe on the lower level. What will occupy the upper level has yet to be determined, however, Terpstra says there are plenty of people interested in the space for a number of different potential uses. Terpstra says that while it's great to see the construction progress on a day-to-day basis, it was those early stages of construction that really made her happy after three years of hard work and red tape at various levels. Terpstra said it was "so exciting" to see the first few frames erected at the site and that Morton had a smile that day that couldn't be wiped off. After extensive consultation with Huron East and the municipality's Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley, Terpstra says that she hopes the Four Winds Barn will mark a new beginning for the village. "I think this is going to be the beginning of something that's very big," Terpstra said. She thinks the barn will create a domino effect in the village that will encourage beautification and renovation throughout Brussels. The newly -approved Community Improvement Plan (CIP) at the Huron East level, a grant program that rewards renovations and improvements to storefronts in the downtown core, is another big piece of that puzzle, she said. What Morton is doing with the barn project, she said, is admirable in the way that he wants to give back to the community. Terpstra said that Brussels is her home as well, and she wants to see it revived and she thinks the Four Winds Barn is going to be a big step in that journey.
