The Madill Track and Field team
competed at the Western Ontario
Secondary School Athletic
Associations (WOSSAA)
championships held at TD
Waterhouse Stadium at the
University of Western Ontario this
past week.
The team achieved outstanding
performances claiming 26 individual
personal bests.
All four Madill relay teams also
claimed personal bests.
Madill athletes set two new
WOSSAA records, three new Madill
records, four new Madill
benchmarks and won a team division
championship.
With the top six individuals in
each event earning a spot in the
Ontario Federation of School
Athletics Association West
Regionals, which were held over the
weekend, Madill qualified 14
athletes in 24 events.
The successes started early in the
meet with the long jump trio of
Emma Jackson, Jaime Newell and
Hannah Bloemberg claiming a gold,
silver and bronze medal in the
Midget Girls long jump event.
At the same time, Ryan Jacklin
was competing in Midget shot put.
He not only broke a 31 -year-old
Madill record set by Charlie Meier
(16.11 metres) but, in an outstanding
heave of 17.15 metres, he obliterated
the existing WOSSAA record of
15.25 metres. The distance of 17.15
metres is actually farther than the
existing OFSAA record of 16.95
metres, set in 2006.
Jacklin went on in his next event to
set a new WOSSAA record and
Madill benchmark when he hurled
the javelin 50.62 metres. The second
day, he earned his third WOSSAA
gold winning the discus with a
personal best of 49.97 metres, only
54 centimetres behind the WOSSAA
record.

Running smoothly and confidently,
she smashed the Madill 3,000 -metre
race record set by Brianna Bird in
2011 by over 30 seconds (10:36.35)
to win another gold. In the Midget
800 -metre race, she broke her
existing Madill record set earlier this
year running strongly in a time of
2:23.38. This time she was nipped in
the final sprint to the finish line and
settled for second.
The 4x100 -metre Midget Girls
relay team, Meghan Ash, Emma
Jackson, Jaime Newell and Hannah
Bloemberg, connected smoothly on
all the exchanges and out -sprinted
their opponents to the finish line to
win WOSSAA gold.
Lots of other points were
accumulated by Madill Midget
athletes in the hurdles (Meghan Ash)
and triple jump (Jaime Newell,
Emma Jackson).
Another member of the Midget
team, Breele Shaw, improved her
previous distance in shot put with a
distance of 9.48 metres to earn a
qualifying spot to Regionals.

VanStuyvenberg, for the second
consecutive meet, threw the discus a
personal best distance of 28.67
metres to win silver in Midget Girls
