Londesborough -area native Lexi
Aitken has excelled in the world of
track and field once again, earning a
number of medals in the 2017 Big
12 Championships, held in
Lawrence, Kansas in mid-May.
Aitken, a full -scholarship athlete
with Texas Christian University
(TCU), placed fifth in the women's
400 -metre hurdles at the
championship with a time of 59.65
seconds. This came after Aitken
qualified for the finals with a
slightly -faster time of 59.09 seconds
in the qualification round.
Aitken also earned some hardware
in the women's 100 -metre hurdles,
placing sixth with a time of 13.39
seconds after slipping into the finals
in the eighth and final qualification
spot with a time of 13.61 seconds.
It was late in 2014 that Aitken
committed to TCU, holding a
special signing ceremony at St.
Anne's Catholic Secondary School
in Clinton. TCU was just the second
school the Canadian track star
visited before making her decision,
after visiting Arizona State
University.
Lexi, as well as her parents Brad
and Amanda, said that Fort Worth,
Texas, where TCU is situated, felt a
lot like London, Ontario, which
seemed familiar for the family.
These accolades are simply the
latest in a long line for the young
woman, who had been turning heads
since her grade school days at
Londesborough's Hullett Central.
Aitken had posted a time of
1:00.27 at the 2014 Youth Olympics
400 -metre hurdling event in
Nanjing, China in August. She
earned a sixth-place finish in the
competition.
In late 2013, Aitken was named
Canada's Youth Athlete of the Year
by Athletics Canada, receiving the
Myrtle Cook Trophy that she shared
with Paul Galas of Mississauga.
Aitken and Galas were teammates
at the International Association of
Athletics Federation World Youth
Champions earlier in 2013 where
she set a Canadian youth record in
the
400 -metre hurdle event, completing
the run in 58.89 seconds.
Other accolades include wins at
the Ontario Federation of School
Athletics Association (OFSAA)
championships starting in Grade 8
as well as setting records in the
Legion National Youth Track and
Field Championships.
