Rain welcomed by farmers, not campers, over weekend PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 What a great week around the area! Farmers were busy, busy, busy. Lots of corn has been planted, manure spread and some farmers moved into planting soybeans. Of course, when you have hundreds of acres to plant in corn, many would not have finished before the sporadic rain hit the area. It was funny last Friday when a sudden downpour stopped machinery from working in one field, but yet, less than a mile away, work continued on. The steady rain of Sunday is a welcome rain, as the ground was getting very dry. Farmers can take a short break, catch up on sleep, grease the machinery and be ready to go again, full steam ahead! It was not a nice long weekend for camping with it being wet and cold. The diehard campers filled the Family Paradise Campground and made the best of it. When you camp with a bunch, you can always find a way to have fun. Returning from a whirlwind trip to St. John, New Brunswick are Jack, Brad and Christine Knight. The event marks the end of the syrup season and welcomes visitors to take part in remembering those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Bob Rowe, shown above speaking to the crowd, traditionally emcees the ceremony. The Walton Raceway had its first event of the year and it was a mudbog. There was no lack of mud, that's for sure and the vehicles I saw go by our house, took a lot home with them. Congratulations to Jeff Grobbink on celebrating his 40th birthday with a surprise party at the Walton Hall. It was organized by his family and a nice crowd was on hand to celebrate with Jeff. Happy birthday! We are sorry to report that Henk Ten Pas is in Wingham Hospital. We hope he is feeling better and can soon be home. He loves visitors but does tire easily. The McDonald family gathered at the home of Kelly and Adam to celebrate young Owen's third birthday. It was a Blue Jay -themed party with everyone in fine uniform. Owen loved his dress -up and Blue Jay cake and having fun with his cousins. When you have two four- year -olds, a three-year-old and a two-year-old, there is lots of noise and fun!
