Club practices judging
ewes, plays games
By Austin Bieman
The second meeting of the
Lucknow Sheep Club was held on
May 11 at the Todd family farm.
First, the club opened with the
pledge. Next, the club did roll call
which was, "would you rather be a
feather or a rock and why?" Then
members took up the minutes from
the last meeting.
After that, members looked at the
quilt block for the IPM quilt and the
club title page that other members
made. Members then voted for their
favourite later in the meeting.
Continuing, each member of the
club went around in a circle saying
the name of his/her sheep and its
breed. Then, the members talked
about the feed samples they brought
in, how much the lambs should be
eating a day, what types of feed
lambs need and what not to feed
them.
Then, the club members were
given a partner and went to either
judge breeding ewes or went to play
a trivia game. When both groups
were done, they switched jobs.
After that time, the club came
together and adjourned the meeting
with the 4-H motto and snacks. For
the next meeting, members are going
on a field trip.
Work on barn business
continues in Brussels
Continued from page 16
past week when the crane arrived to
put the top on the silo and lift the
beams in place for the barn. It
started on Tuesday morning and by
evening Brussels had made the news
and is on the map. Good progress
was made during the week and
people can now envision better what
it will look like.
We hope work continues well as
everyone is anxious to see the
finished product in the village.

WI global church service held
Members of the Huron Perth
District Women's Institutes held
their Associated Country Women of
the World (ACWW) church service
on April 30 at St. Peter's Lutheran
Church in Brodhagen.
Deb Elligsen led the service and
welcomed everyone. Lorianne
Schmidt and Elinor Cook had
scripture readings. Winnie Trachsel
introduced the guest speaker, Ken
Waglar, who has devoted his time
to drilling new wells in Zambia,
and Andrah Pradesh, in eastern
India.
Ken and his family are farmers in
Perth County and in 1979 they were
devastated by the Woodstock
tornado. It had a profound effect on
their family as they realized the
difference volunteer help can make
in times of disaster and hardship,
thus began their mission work in
Caribbean and Central America.
After visiting Zambia in 1997,
Ken saw the desperate need for a
good supply of clean drinking water
and as a result the purchase of a
small drilling machine was made
and 20 years later he is still doing
that.
By 2017 there have been 150 wells
drilled in remote villages and on
mission stations where the only
source of water has been the
crocodile -infested Zambezi River.
The depth of the wells depends on
the soil and Ken uses a water wand
to locate water sources.
When the villagers' new well is
working they perform a "water"
happy dance. Ken showed slides
from his trips and answered
questions from the audience.
Mary McTavish thanked Ken for
his presentation. The collection will
be divided between the ACWW
"Water for ALL" project and to
MSC Canada towards the Zambia
well drilling fund.
Members of the Huron Perth
District provided lunch following
the service.
