Letter to the Editor
Storeys praise Huron IPM tent, heritage focus
THE EDITOR,
We read in The Citizen that the
theme of the Huron County tent at
the International Plowing Match will
be Huron heritage. What a great way
to honour our Huron pioneers!
We are so proud of our pioneer
families: Storey, Young, Dale, Snell,
McIntosh, McCloud, Riley,
Dempsey, McClure and Flynn.
These families came from
Scotland, Ireland and England, then
walked from Canada's east coast,
through the bush, carrying all their
worldly possessions to find their
Spring forward
The students at Hullett Central Public School recent held their annual spring concert, which
took on a decidedly Canadian theme this year in honour of Canada's sesquicentennial this
July. The performances all highlighted different aspects of Canadian life from the very early
days up to today's Canada. From left: Elizabeth Howson, Ben Hubbard, Dillon Bordignon and

claim of land in McKillop and
Hullett Townships in the 1850s.
They had to clear minimum acreage
and build a habitable dwelling
within a specific time limit to obtain
their letter patent and land deed,
using only the resources that they
brought with them. Our ancestors
prospered, cleared more land and
helped make Huron County the
agricultural engine that it is today,
while preserving some of the best
soil and cleanest water and air in the
world.
Comparing Huron, Perth, Oxford
and Middlesex Counties, Huron
County is first in chickens and swine
production, second in turkeys and
third with cattle and sheep. In crops,
Huron is first in soys, white beans
and corn, second in winter wheat
(land use number of hectares).
Regarding trees and wetland Huron
is second.
We do not need the Huron Natural
Heritage Plan when Huron county
already exceeds many other
counties.
Congratulations to all councils of
Huron County for honouring our
Huron agriculture pioneers at the
Huron IPM 2017.
Ray and Barbara Storey,
Winthrop.

taking action to reduce phosphorus
entering the watersheds and Great
Lakes by adopting the 4R Nutrient
Stewardship principles. Working
groups have been organized across
Ontario agricultural organizations to
evaluate agronomic practices to
reduce nutrient loss, like cover crops
and timing of nutrient applications.
Agricultural groups are also working
with the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
to develop an Agricultural Soil
Health and Conservation Strategy,
another valuable resource in the line-
up of efforts to reduce phosphorus
loss into our Great Lakes.
Ontario's Great Lakes Basin
includes 95 per cent of Ontario's
agricultural land. As farmers, we
know how important it is to keep our
environment healthy, including our
soil, waterways and the Great Lakes.
We're committed to reducing
phosphorus entering Lake Erie and
are diligently working with
collaborative groups, research
initiatives and continuing to improve
our farming practices to make a
difference.
