Council defers firearms bylaw Service with a smile The Blyth United Church held a drive-thru lunch supper fundraiser on May 4. Volunteers like Brenda Brooks had shelter from whatever weather would come as the church's overhang allowed the drive-thru to operate through sun, rain and everything in between. (Denny Scott photo) FROM BLYTH By Denny Scott The Citizen North Huron Council is now seeking future public input on a proposed blanket firearms bylaw after significant feedback from ratepayers. The bylaw, which was originally called for by Councillor Bill Knott due to his claims of firearms being discharged in Blyth and incidents in surrounding communities with pseudo -firearms like BB guns, was Cable welcomed as guest speaker From Marilyn's Desk By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, May 7, was Marilyn Craig. Ushering were Rob Mason and Marilyn Craig. Marilyn Scott was organist and choir director. Fred Hakkers ran the Power Point. David Onn welcomed everyone to church on such a bright and chilly morning. Due to renovations to the sanctuary the service will be held in the basement auditorium until renovations are completed. David introduced Sandra Cable as the guest speaker. Sandra lit the Christ candle. The first hymn, "Spirit of Life" was sung. Sandra invited everyone to greet one another. The prayer of approach was said in unison. The first scripture reading was from Genesis 6: 10-22: the story of the wickedness of the world. The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Sandra had a box in her hand and asked the children if they liked getting presents. Of course the answer was yes. Her next question was do you like giving gifts and the answers were yes. She asked the children which gifts they had to give. She told them that their hands were gifts that they could give. You can give hugs with them, you can shake hands with them, you can use them to help someone with their chores. We all can give gifts. The people doing the renovations are giving their gifts of love for the church. She handed them a treat out of the box and the children said a prayer along with Sandra and the congregation. The children went into the nursery for their time of fellowship. The next hymn, "God, Whose Farm is All Creation"was sung. The second scripture reading was from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. Sandra's message to the congregation was "Do We Measure Up in a Stewardship". Sandra asked the congregation if they challenged themselves? Sandra said her two challenges were mouse traps and bats. She said today was inspirational day. Last Sunday in this church was an inspirational day that breathed life into us. The choir gets inspired when they see the joy on the faces of the congregation. People working hard inspire others to do the same. Jesus inspires us with His many teachings. Time, treasure and talent inspire us to do things out of our comfort zone. Noah was asked by God to be a steward, to build an ark. Noah carries out what God wanted him to do. We are stewards of our time. Time and talents are our tools. The next hymn, "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky" was sung followed by the offering being received, the offertory response "What Can I Do?", the offertory prayer, the prayers for the people and the singing of the Lord's Prayer. The last hymn, "Take My Life and Let It Be" was followed by the benediction and the singing of the response, "He Lives." Everyone was invited for coffee, treats and fellowship. deferred during council's May 1 meeting. Deputy -Reeve James Campbell moved to defer the issue until further public consultation could be collected. Fellow council members Councillor Ray Hallahan and Reeve Neil Vincent agreed, stating they had heard from ratepayers on the issue and the ramifications the bylaw may pose. Councillor Trevor Seip said the bylaw had a "muddy motive" as far as he could tell. While the bylaw is for firearm control, Knott's original concerns were raised when the issue of dispatching wild animals with a firearm within an urban area was raised. Council, however, has since directed staff to research a bylaw specifically for dealing with nuisance or sick animals Seip said he wanted clarity as to the intention of the bylaw before public consultation was considered. "Are we trying to stop a 10 -year- old kid shooting at a target with a Canadian Tire bow?" he asked. "What do we want to accomplish? We have to set the bylaw accordingly." Councillor Brock Vodden said the bylaw needed to be clarified because "lawful ranges" wasn't adequately defined. Vodden also said that rabid animals needed to be considered Continued on page 8 Mo cycle Jackets Bainton's Old Mill Downtown Blyth 519-523-4740 The greatest burden, sorrow and trouble (John Owen) "What a wretched man I am!
