(Denny Scott photo) By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a normal week at the Brussels Legion Branch, which played host to the Cadets and Pipe Band. Cadets are still collecting pop cans and returnable bottles and thank those who have dropped them off. The Legion also collects the pop tabs and sends them on to Elora. The fish fry crew went to Trinity United Church in Listowel on Wednesday to feed about 270 hungry folks. The prep work was handled by Deb Cann, Jo -Ann McDonald and Judy Lee. Heading to Listowel to work were Deb Ross, Deb Cann, Sharon Robbins, Judy Lee, Bob and Monica Richardson, and Allyson Cardiff, Jamie Mitchell and Daisy Wong stopping by to assist for awhile. The group managed to get the job done while the weather was still nice, but it Flagpoles Huron East Council has approved the purchase of three new flagpoles for the corner of County Road 12 and Brantford Street in Seaforth. Representatives from the Seaforth Optimist Club approached council at its May 2 meeting to ask for help in purchasing the three flags, which would fly the Canadian, Huron East and Optimist Club flags. While the staff recommendation suggested a report, Deputy -Mayor Joe Steffler put forward a motion that the municipality simply pay for the flagpoles at a cost of between $160 and $180 each. Members of the club plan to install the flagpoles themselves. Rev. Linda Nicholls. This special service was held at St. John's Anglican Church in Brussels, with the three congregations attending. Local minister, Archdeacon Allan Livingstone welcomed Bishop Linda to the service which included special music, a potluck lunch and a question -and -answer period with the Bishop. She is the 13th Bishop and the first woman Bishop of Huron, which covers an area from Tobermory to Windsor to Brantford. She was formerly the Suffragan Bishop of Toronto. We are pleased to hear that Comrade Bush Whittard is at home. He is taking it easy and we hope he is feeling better. The Branch was the venue for the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) District 8 Ambassador competition on Saturday. The group gathered for the afternoon of interviews and interaction with the nine contestants. Personal interviews were held and then dinner was served. The evening was opened to the public at 7 p.m. and the contestants presented a very enjoyable evening of speeches. The dinner was provided by Comrades Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville and Deb Cann. A good job by the ladies. The Royal Canadian Legion provincial public speaking approved Council approved the recommendation, noting that this was the first time in the club's 50 years that the Optimists had ever approached council for financial assistance. *** Council authorized the replacement of the decorative fence on the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club property at a cost of $15,490.76 plus tax. The tender came from Scenic Fence and Deck and was the lowest of the three tenders received. Deputy -Clerk Mark Gilpin said the tenders were close to the anticipated cost of $16,000 included in the 2017 budget for the project. *** As of the end of March, Huron East had issued 13 building permits with nine being issued in the month of March. The year-to-date permits have a value of nearly $1.5 million, which is substantially lower than at the same time last year when the value of the 28 permits issued was over $4.3 million. All nine building permits issued in March were for properties in Grey, McKillop and Tuckersmith. competition was held in Stratford Legion on Saturday and our area can be very proud of one young man. James Speer, son of Dave and Margaret (Jarvis) Speer, was the winner of the Primary Division for Ontario! The young man did a fantastic job and will have great memories of this experience. His speech was entitled "Adults say the Weirdest Things". Congrats to James!
