Ah, spring is here. Then, as we
say, the sweet smell of spring. The
farmers are busy spreading manure
and of course, there is the distinct
odour of success. Many, of course,
think of the sometimes very strong
smell as awful, but for the farmers, it
means they are saving money. The
manure will save fertilizer costs for
the upcoming spring crops to be
planted, that will feed the animals,
that will create more manure, that
will be spread on the ground again,
and the cycle continues. The joy of
spring and farming.
The weather has not been helping
the farming situation to this point in
time. There has been some
cultivating done, but very few fields
are planted. Some early grain is
planted but not many fields in our
area. They have spread fertilizer on
wheat and on some corn ground and
many are still just getting equipment
ready. Needless to say, when it stays
dry for a few days in a row, the
wheels will turn quickly. Remember
to watch for the large machinery on
the roads and drive accordingly.
A lovely sign of spring is the
daffodils and tulips blooming in the
gardens. Trilliums are just starting in
the bush with a few early bloomers.
Soon the bush floor will be covered
by the lovely Ontario flower!
The Brussels birthday group
gathered to celebrate the April
birthdays last week. The birthday
girls included Merle Cousins, Betty
McCutcheon, Jean Davidson and
Alice Marks. Enjoying the dinner at
JR's and the social time celebrating
with the birthday girls included
Isabelle Wheeler, Marci Bremner,
Nora Stephenson, Betty Campbell,
Lois McCutcheon, Rene Richmond,
Laura Barbour, Bev Palmer, Audrey
Cardiff, Jane Hall, Sandra Cable,
Joan Bernard and Dale Chesher.
Happy birthday ladies.
We are pleased to hear that Jean
Bridge is home again from hospital.
We hope she is doing well. Bush
Whittard is a patient in Wingham
Hospital and we hope he is doing
better.
We are sorry to hear that Marion
Smith has suffered a fall and is
having to endure a slow recovery.
We hope she continues to improve.
Congratulations to Jim and Linda
McDonald on becoming
grandparents for the second time.
Proud parents are Sarah and Barry
Young and have welcomed Karter
Barry to their family. He will be
welcomed home by big brother
Dallas!
We hope Fannie Somers is feeling
better and home from a stay in
Seaforth Hospital. We hope she is on
the road to recovery.
The Cranbrook ladies who have
been friends for over 50 years in
most cases gathered to celebrate a
special birthday for one of their
group. Betty Knight turned 85 and
was joined by friends for dinner at
JR's. The group included Isabelle
Wheeler, Marion Smith, Merle
McIntosh, Betty McCutcheon, Dona
Knight, Yvonne Knight, Tueni Smith
and Mary Morrow. The ladies then
went to Betty McCutcheon's to
enjoy cake and a social afternoon.
Our condolences to Jim and Lois
A great send-off
Rev. Gary Clark, right, presided over his final service at
Blyth United Church on Sunday. Clark has officially left the
Blyth and Brussels churches and will be heading to a
church in Kitchener shortly. (Vicky Bremner photo)

good reminder that there are at least
two sides to every story and every
person has an effect of life itself.
Then there was a walrus
presentation from Iqaluit of and by
First Nations and Indigenous people.
A few whites were included, if they
had relevant issues to present, like
Kyle Hill founder of "Teach for
Canada". This young man saw a
need, noted injustice and then
believe it or not, he and others
listened for three years before
setting up a school system for
communities in Northern Ontario.
The less we know about something,
often the more we express our
opinion. This program listened to
the affected people about culture,
language, education, geography,
history and most of all hope. Two
good programs — wow.
Gary Clark did his travel -on
service on Sunday when the
congregations of Blyth and Brussels
United bid adieu with lots of music
and fun. A combined choir and band
set the tone for an upbeat celebration
of ministry, words were spoken,
food was shared and a new chapter
for Gary and Kathy Douglas and us
has begun. Good memories will be
with us for a long time.
Enjoy the fine days of May.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Lee on the passing of Jim's brother
Ed. They travelled to Huntsville for
the funeral. Our sympathies to them.
Graeme Craig has been doing
some cleaning up by levelling the
old barn foundation at his place. We
hope everyone is getting in the
clean-up mode for the upcoming
International Plowing Match (IPM).
In Wingham hospital for a stay is
Sharon Warwick. She would loved to
have visitors to help pass the time. I
am told that Wingham hospital does
not have personal televisions for
patients anymore. Yikes, how
boring! There are still lots of folks
out there that do not have iPads or
tablets to watch (like me) and that
sounds like it could be a very boring
stay.
We send our get -well or happy
healing wishes to Dawn White who
has a knee done. We hope she is
coming along well. Joanne Machan
has also had a new knee done and is
coming along very well. She is out
and about again and doing well. We
hope Ross Smith is doing well after
spending some time in Seaforth
hospital. We hope he is feeling
better.
Celebrating his 65th birthday this
past week and looking forward to his
brown envelope is Don Dalton. Don
and Pat were joined by Gerrid and
his family for breakfast at the Walton
Inn on Saturday morning. He also
celebrated with good friend Jim
Ross, whose birthday is May 3, and
wives, Pat and Betty, for birthday
supper. They enjoyed Chinese food
in Wingham and then the ladies
handily beat the men at cards. Happy
birthday guys!
Graeme Craig celebrated a special
birthday last week with a party that
included family and friends. The
group of 19 gathered at the cottage
of Dave and Shannon Craig-
Soontiens in Bayfield for a delicious
catered dinner. Helping Graeme to
celebrate his 70th birthday were
George and Ruth Townsend, Allan
and Karen Carter, Gerald and Nancy
Smith, Fred and Karen Uhler, Jim
and Janet Papple, Jack and Mary
Helen McLachlan, Jim Mcllwain
and friend and Dave, Shannon and
Michael Craig. Happy birthday
Graeme!
Congratulations to Jason and
Meghan Gemmel on the birth of a
son last week. Landon made his
an-ival 10 days late but is doing fine.
He is welcomed home by big sister
McKenna. Landon is another
grandchild for Glenn and Marilyn
Beuermann of Walton.
Neil McDonald has been home for
his spring visit to the family and
farm. Unfortunately the weather is
not co-operating and not much land
work is being done. Neil and Rick
went to Listowel to have a visit and
lunch with cousin Paul and Margery
Krauter one day last week. Neil will
be heading home before the ground
dries up, if this rain continues!
The Walton Hall is having some
electrical upgrades done to make it
better. Some new plug -ins, upgrades
to lighting and emergency lights
installed. It all will make the hall
nicer for everyone.
We celebrated our grandson's
second birthday on the weekend.
Wes loves to get noisy toys and see
all his relatives. The McDonald and
Dick families gathered at the home
of Scott and Alicia for a party and
supper on Sunday.
The birthdays for the month of
April are finished off by Graeme
Craig, Paul Humphries, Casey
Bernard, Michael Axtmann, Amy
Alcock, Brad Finlayson, Jessica
Fraser, Kelly Marks, Jenna Regele,
Kelsey Eckert, Marcy McCall
MacBain, Candace Newman, Pat
Parr, Donald Dalton, John Huether,
Dave Lewington and Joe Steffler.
May starts with Chris Holmes, Chad
McCallum, Judy Valley, Bev Fraser,
Mitchell Godkin, Lori Nolan,
Anneleis Ringgenberg, Kendra
Cardiff, Justin Bernard, Don
Williamson and Andrea Humphries.
Happy birthday to all!
