Ladies Night Out a success
The first-ever Blyth Legion and
Legion Ladies Auxiliary Ladies
Night Out fundraiser event was a
great success according to organizer
Susan Hubbard.
"We had a good turnout and the
speakers were awesome," she said.
"Everyone that was there had a good
time."
The event was held in the upper
hall at the Blyth Community Centre
last week and featured Ingy
Marshall from Greyhaven Gardens,
health and wellness professional
Jillian Walden and Lori Lupton from
Pelee Island Winery.
Approximately $1,800 was raised
through the event for the Blyth
Legion Building Fund for three
future projects: a new roof,
renovated kitchen and renovated bar.
Funds were raised through vendor
attendance, a silent auction with
approximately 25 items, a 50/50
draw and a raffle draw for a special
trip to Pelee Island Winery and
Tulip bloom event set
The Friends of the Village of Blyth
are hosting a bloom ceremony as a
sequel to last fall's tulip -planting
ceremony.
Late last year, the gardening group
that rose from the ashes of the
disbanded Blyth Horticultural
Society was awarded one of the
country's prestigious Canada 150
tulip gardens and gardeners,
residents and dignitaries all turned
out to plant the flowers at the garden.
Now, with spring here, the flowers
are ready to bloom and the group is
celebrating the generous gift from
the Canadian Garden Council.
The bloom ceremony is set for
Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14 at 1
p.m. at Blyth Horticulture Park at
303 Dinsley Street.
The ceremony will also feature
cake and refreshments to help mark
the special day.

FROM BLYTH
Clark's last service marked with customized song
From Marilyn's Desk
By Marilyn
Craig
Call
523-9318
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, April 30
were Sandra Machan and Sue
Overholt from Brussels and Lavern
Clark and Marilyn Craig from Blyth.
Ushering were Sandra Cable and
Ralph Watson from Brussels and
Nancy Hakkers and Laurie Sparling
from Blyth. Glenda Morrison of
Brussels and Marilyn Scott, Blyth
were organists. Katie Dockstader
was choir director. Fred Hakkers ran
the Power Point.
Blyth and Brussels United
Churches joined together to wish
Rev. Gary Clark farewell. While the
members of the congregations were
gathering, musicians from both
churches led a sing -along of songs
with Cheryl Cronin and Avon
Corneil singing the solo part.
Steven Sparling welcomed
everyone to church. He invited
everyone to stay after the service for
lunch and drew everyone's attention
to the announcements printed in the
bulletin. He mentioned that there
would be a short congregational
meeting for both churches right after
the service to put in place the
paperwork for hiring the new
minister. The Christ candle and the
other candles on the altar table were
lit by the children. The first verse of
"Lord Prepare Me" was sung.
Rev. Gary Clark invited everyone
to greet the people close to them.
The choir members from Brussels
and Blyth sang the anthem, "God's
Many Blessings". The scripture
reading was from John 14:14-19, the
story of Jesus comforting His
Disciples.
Rev. Clark asked the children to
come forward for their story time.
Rev. Clark explained the scripture to
the children, Jesus asking the
Disciples to feed His sheep (the
people). He asked the children to
turn and face the congregation and
he told them that we are all Jesus'
sheep. The children, along with Rev.
Clark and the congregation, said a
prayer and the children went back to
the seats.
Connor Brooks was confirmed
into the United Church of Canada.
Everyone said a prayer for the
community. The choirs sang the
anthem "The Folk 23rd" . Everyone
was invited to take communion. The
hymn "One Bread, One Body" was
sung followed by the prayer of
thanksgiving and the singing of the
Lord's Prayer.
Bob Kellington and Mary Ann
Thompson from Brussels along with
Gwen Papple, Emily Phillips, Mary
Lou Stewart and Doug Howson from
Blyth served the elements.
Rev. Clark's message to the
congregation was "Remember, Feed
the Sheep". Jesus challenges His
Disciples to feed His sheep. He
reminds them that they are fishers of
men.
There is a story of a father and son
and the gap between generations and
Jesus tells us how to fix it. When we
come to a cross road, the road
through small towns is better but we
often chose the main highways
because they are faster. The
emphasis should never be on time
but on good.
Rev. Clark thanked everyone for
their generous support and also
supporting his sometimes -crazy
ideas in his time in Blyth and
Brussels. Rev. Clark received a
standing ovation.
The offering was received
followed by the offertory response
Grant Us God the Grace, the
offertory prayer, the litany for the
ending of a ministry and the prayers
of the people.
Emily Phillips and Betty Graber -
Watson came to the front and wished
Rev. Clark all the best in his new
ministry. The congregation sang a
song "Gotta Travel On", the new
words written by Betty Graber -
Watson in honour Gary Clark with
music by Paul Clayton. Rev. Clark
said grace.
The benediction was followed by
the singing of "Side by Side" and
"King of the Road" accompanied the
bands from both churches. Everyone
went downstairs to enjoy a roast
Here --put your troubles here!
(Charles Spurgeon)
"Cast your burden on the Lord --and He will sustain you." Psalm 55:22
Cast your troubles where you have cast your sins. You have cast your sins
onto Jesus --cast your troubles there also!
As soon as the trouble comes, quick, the first thing --tell it to your
heavenly Father! Remember, that the longer you take telling your trouble
to God --the more your peace will be impaired. The longer the frost lasts-
-the more likely the ponds will be frozen.
Oh! It is a happy way of smoothing sorrow, when we can cast our burden
upon the Lord. Oh, you agitated Christians, do not dishonour your
religion by always wearing a `frown of concern." Come, cast your burden
upon the Lord.
I see you staggering beneath a weight which He would not feel. What
seems a crushing burden to you --would be nothing but a bit of dust to
Him!
See! The Almighty bends His shoulders, and He says: "Here—put your
troubles here!"
"Cast all your cares upon Him --because He cares about you!" 1 Peter 5:7
