The Citizen, 2017-05-04, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017. A fond farewell After nearly 10 years in the community, Rev. Gary Clark held his final service on Sunday — a joint service with Blyth and Brussels United Churches. The service featured plenty of music, both performed by Clark himself and by musicians within both congregations. Here, Mary Ann Thompson, left, Betty Graber Watson, centre, and Joan Bernard, did their part as members of a mass performance. (Vicky Bremner photo) At the Branch New Branch executive elected By Jo -Ann McDonald The month of April at the Brussels Legion Branch was busy. Elections were held at the general meeting last week. There were no new Comrades attending to step forward to take a place on the executive. The elections were run by Comrade Glenn Bridge and Deputy Zone Commander Keith Vanderhoek. The new executive consists of President, Jamie Mitchell; First -Vice President, Andy Overholt; Second Vice -President, Judy Lee; Treasurer, Alicia McDonald, Secretary, Catrina Josling; Sergeant -at -Arms, Lisa Glanville; executive committee members, Mabel Glanville, Eric Ross, Deb Ross, Nanci Ducharme, Lisa Glanville and Sandra Josling and Past -President Jo -Ann McDonald. President Jamie Mitchell will be looking to fill the many chairs of the committees. Some will remain the same, but others will need new chairs and committee members. Please consider his request and help out the Branch in some way by serving on a committee. We hope that all Comrades have tickets for the July 1 draw and have books to sell. This is our major summer fundraiser and we hope every Comrade can do their best to help sell the draw tickets. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 11 tables of players at play. The showers of April have set things growing at a marvellous rate. The many shades of green are evident and the growth is measurable by the day on many of the plants. Yes rebirth is a wonder. The Canada 150 tulips were a hit last fall with many stores wanting more. Now as the bulbs grow and sprout, comparisons of development are heard as the leaves show their variegation and the flowers are showing form. One patch has a few orange blooms out already where the supposedly red and white bulbs were planted. Oh Canada, we celebrate our diversity even in the bulbs. The daffodil field west of Belgrave that I talked about last week that was so good to see, I've since been told that John Gaunt is the one to thank for the spring display. So thanks John. Many times we grumble about nothing to watch on television, I lucked out on Sunday evening. A documentary on The Beast, the fire of last year in Fort McMurray was shown. Details were filmed from the beginning on May 2 including, the power of the wind, the height of the fire, the exodus of 88,000 people, the power of fire and the effect it has on weather, the role of the water treatment people and all the after- effects in this past year.
