Londesborough UC hosts its annual Songfest Audibly Awesome The men from the group Audibly Awesome were part of the Londesborough United Church's annual Songfest, which was held at the church on Sunday night. The group wrapped up the first half of the program before a short intermission and then took to the stage again midway through the second half of the performance. (Vicky Bremner photo) Hullett carnival set for Friday PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 If memory serves me right, May 1 was Arbor Day when I was in elementary school. That was the day classes were suspended while the whole student body scoured our rather large school grounds picking up sticks, stones and other rubbish. The only good thing about it was we got a break from lessons and enjoyed the out of doors. Fast forward many years and the new term is Earth Day. And with the abundance of fast food establishments these days, the need to pick up trash is definitely needed. The Grade 8 pupils from Hullett Central Public School were helping the Londesborough folk last Friday when they walked the streets with garbage bags tidying up the village. It was a cold, windy day so they may think twice the next time they consider tossing trash. It was no coincidence that the Huron County 4-H club held its e -recycling last Saturday. Just one more way to protect our natural resources and clear out its unused 'Round the corner Kennedy Huether, left, of Hullett Central Public School did her best to work a move around the corner to the side of the court last week as part of regional basketball action at Central Huron Secondary School. Here, the Hullett team took on a team from Brookside Public School in the Dungannon area. (Dennyscottphoto) items. By mid-afternoon the truck was full. This Friday, the Student Advisory Committee for Hullett Central Public School will hold its annual silent auction and carnival at the Blyth Community Centre from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Back again this year are the penny table, face painting, tattoos, balloons and various games for the children. Adults can try their luck for the auction. There will be both silent and live auctions featuring many items. Buy some baked goods or candy. Classroom baskets are always fun too. Funds raised this year are designated for a storage shed for playground games/toys/equipment. Your support would be appreciated. The Hullett senior band will be participating in a "loud and proud" day at Stratford Northwestern School on May 2. They will attend workshops specific to their instruments with specialized presenters. A mass concert, to which the public is invited, begins at 6:30 p.m. What a great experience for the musicians. Erica Baxter is offering a "spring oversized wreath workshop" at Londesborough United Church on Saturday, May 6. Numbers are limited so call Erica at 519-523- 9434 to secure a spot. When I decided to write this weekly column, it was about the time of amalgamation and I did not want Londesborough to lose its identity. Bringing the village news to each of you has been my way of keeping the area aware of activities here. I was contacted by a member of the Central Huron 150 Celebration committee last week. The committee would like to have a display from all three wards of the municipality during Pluckin' Fest Weekend, July 6-9. I offered to get Hullett Township thinking about this. The display would consist of whatever residents of the township offer. If you have family heirlooms tucked away — furniture, clothing, pictures, books, etc. — now is the time to get them dusted off. If you would like to contribute and/or help with the organizing, I would appreciate hearing from you so we can start. Londesborough United Church held its annual Songfest on Sunday, April 23 under the direction of Barb Bosman. Mark Mitchell was the very capable emcee for the evening. Barb noted that this annual evening of music was created and organized for many years by church member Elgin Penfound. Elgin always paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth at every event. In tribute to Elgin, Barb played a tune titled "America" which had bars of "God Save the Queen". While she played, the audience enjoyed a Power Point show of noted sites in Canada. Since Barb had planned the evening as a celebration of our country's 150th birthday, everyone enjoyed a mini Canadian singalong. Included were "Four Strong Winds" and Stompin' Tom's "Hockey Song". Entertainment was offered by musicians of all ages — as Mark commented — from the young to the more seasoned. Cassie Elliott is a 10 year old fiddler from the village of Londesborough who performed four numbers with her teacher, Jeanette Seers. of Clinton. They played the familiar "Bonaparte's Retreat' and "Boogie Woogie". Twelve year old Aaron Matthews is a strong talented singer from Goderich who was accompanied by Paul Howe. His four numbers included "Steal Away" composed by Antonin Dvorak and, what he remarked is his favourite hymn, "Here I Am Lord" Both these young performers have a great future in music ahead of them. A group of five harpists came together through their love of harp playing and they call themselves Kindred Spirit. These talented ladies also sing duets and solo parts in their numbers. The audience enjoyed "Edelweiss' and. a nod to Canada's birthday, "Away From the Roll of the Sea" during their sets. Audibly Awesome, a group of eight men, is well known in the area and is always appreciated by the audience. In their first set, the members performed "Music from Our Times" such as "Hello, Mary Lou" and "Your Cheatin' Heart". In their second set, the men offered gospel numbers like "Blessed Saviour" and Elvis Presley's "He Touched Me". The senior Londesborough choir of United Church opened the evening with a song and dance routine "All God's Creatures" and ended the evening with "They Call It Canada". As well as group numbers the men of the choir performed a number, as did the women. If you missed this year's Songfest, mark your calendar now for next year, the Sunday after Easter. It is always a fun, refreshing evening of music. FROM LONDESBORO REPRINTS OF PHOTOS taken by Citizen photographers are available to purchase.
