Madill School Track and Field team kicked off its season competing in an invitational meet at St. James Catholic High School in Guelph. Madill athletes fared well in the field of over 1,200 athletes. This year's team features a good number of young students of Midget age, as well as experienced Senior age athletes. Despite it being the first meet of a rainy, cool season, the Madill squad accumulated 19 personal bests. Brooke Jez raced to a close finish in the Midget 800 -metre to slash a 40 - year -old school record in the event. Her time of 2:27.24 eclipsed the old mark of 2:29.4 set by Janet Wood in 1977. As well, Ryan Jacklin set two new benchmarks with his first place finishes in the Midget discus (42.15 metres) and javelin (44.76 metres). The Midget Girls 4x100 -metre relay blazed their way around the track connecting smoothly on their exchanges to win the event in 55.52 seconds. The team now looks forward to more competition in the weeks to come as they prepare for the Huron Perth Championships in Clinton on May 9-10. They were also scheduled to travel to London to compete at Regina Mundi on April 26, followed by a meet that Madill hosts at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School on May 2. Members of the Wingham Golf and Curling Club have worked diligently in the past several weeks to prepare the grounds and are pleased to announce that the course is now open. There were approximately 30 volunteers at the club on Easter Monday removing branches, raking and clearing debris from the winter, and the greens and fairways are now in excellent shape. The board of directors is very pleased to have hands-on physical support from members and others in the area who would like to see the club continue to operate. The club has recently undergone some major management changes to improve the cost efficiency of operating the club. The club has hired an interim manager, Mike Cottrill, who, with the help of dedicated volunteers, will keep the club open on a daily basis. He says his managing priority is to have members and visitors feel welcomed as they enjoy the coming golf season. Memberships are now being accepted for the 2017 golfing season. The rate for adults is $600 and for new members and young adults it is $400. There is also special pricing for youth membership at a rate of $150. The golf course will be available Letter to the Editor Vodden against bi-weekly pickup THE EDITOR, Bi -weekly waste and recycling collection is a really bad idea for many North Huron people. North Huron staff have been directed by council to find ways to reduce costs wherever possible. One idea is to reduce garbage pick- up to every second week. Yes, it would save some money. However, it would present many households with a very serious and insoluble problem. Many homes and apartments have very little or no room for storing two weeks' worth of waste material. If saving money is the only criterion, then why not go to once - a -month pickup? I am not recommending this, but the thought of it might make the implications of the matter clearer to a few more people. Brock Vodden Councillor - Blyth Ward North Huron Council. daily for golfing.
