Dale, the community outreach and events co-ordinator for the society, spoke to Huron County Council at its April 12 committee of the whole meeting about the society and all it does for residents of the county. Dale told council that while the The crack of dawn Living Water Christian Fellowship in Blyth held its annual sunrise service on Easter Sunday just south of the village on Cemetery Line. (Vicky Bremner photo) Closed session used for complaints Morris-Turnberry Council took the complaints of a local business owner behind closed doors after he wrote a letter to council regarding complications in expanding his business. During council's April 4 meeting, a letter from Murray Simpson outlined the problems he had working with Huron County staff to expand his roofing business, including fluctuating prices, site plan control processes and inconsistent answers. Simpson's letter outlines Huron County staff members being dismissive of his grasp of technical documents, problems with receiving different answers from different county representatives and his mounting frustration at trying to build a commercial structure for his roofing business. Simpson said, after nine and a half weeks without answers, he was reaching out to the municipality for any ideas to help. Councillor Jim Nelemans questioned whether the letter was sent only to Morris-Turnberry or if it was sent to Huron County Council as well. Administrator-Clerk/Treasurer Nancy Michie said the letter had only been sent to Morris- Turnberry. At that time, Mayor Paul Gowing suggested moving discussion of the letter to an in -camera session at the end of the meeting. "This has to do with identifiable individuals," he said, referring to the staff members wrote about in his letter. "I'm not trying to be not transparent, but I wonder if we should take this into closed," Gowing said. Council concurred with Gowing and the remainder of the discussion was closed to the public. After the closed session, council announced no future action for the issue according to Administrator Clerk -Treasurer Nancy Michie. society focuses on those with dementia, there are a number of support programs and informational aspects to the society for family members and loved ones of those with dementia. The programs offered, she told councillors, included a monthly support group for families of those with dementia, the Circle of Friends program for those with dementia, as well as individual and family counselling and support. Dale also discussed the iPods for Memories program, which has proven to generate results with those suffering from dementia. Often, she told councillors, music can trigger memories or emotions with which patients have been out of touch for a long time. She said the program has been known to trigger memories, get often non-responsive patients talking or even dancing. The society also administers a number of public education programs, including the memory and aging program, school programs, Heads Up for Healthy Brains presentations, dementia experience sensitivity training and an array of dementia presentations for service clubs, faith communities, seniors dining programs and businesses. Dale told councillors about the society's funding breakdown, which is 60 per cent provided by the Southwest Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and 40 per cent from fundraising and donations. In closing her presentation, Dale told councillors that one of the society's biggest fundraisers of the year was approaching in May with the Walk for Alzheimer's on Saturday, May 13. The walk will be taking place in three locations across the county, she said, in Clinton, Exeter and Wingham She encouraged all councillors to participate and further suggested that they bring pledge forms back to their lower -tier councils in the hopes that more municipal representatives may get involved.
