Signs of spring continue to show up in Brussels A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Happy Easter! What a great way to celebrate spring, to gather family, At the Branch friends and food and just let things happen. The last week before Easter is always full of life. Remembering the stories of Jesus and seeing how many such events are still going on today is enough to make you really ponder life. And like life itself, for all that's wrong and cruel, hope springs forth and love and life come through once again. How often do the rotten things in life, on reflection, make sense and so often make us better for the trial? So, Easter is here now. The story of cruelty, bribery, jealousy and hate continues today, with different people and places. Easter reminds us of new life, new hope and new beginnings. We are here as that hope, to make the world a better place in our small way. Family gatherings were happening all over the place all weekend long. A time to rekindle, rejuvenate with family and take stock for times ahead. Traditions hold as long as they are relevant but sometimes they need to go. The labour intensive full fowl meal has been broken down at this house, it seems that whatever meat is available is just fine as long as it involves gravy and mashed potatoes. Pie choices are no longer a hit — thank God. More popular — trifle, cheesecake or tarts. So the world changes and so do we, all for the better I'm sure. Spring sports are getting their workout. Balls and gloves, shoes and nets are all checked out, shots and pitches are seen in many spots. Oh, the sounds of spring. Good Friday marks start of fish fry season By Jo -Ann McDonald Happy Easter to all! We hope everyone had a nice time with family over the holiday. The Good Friday holiday, for the last few years, has signalled the start of the fish fry season for the Brussels Legion Branch. The Seaforth Curling Club hosts a fry and has a great attendance with just over 200 people enjoying the meal. The week began with Lisa Glanville and Joan Smith making sure all the fryers were clean and in good working order. Jo -Ann McDonald made sure there were fish and batter in stock and Deb Ross made sure there was enough oil and the workers were organized. Deb Cann and Jo -Ann thawed the fish and made sure all the utensils were in the travel bin. Cooking duties for the day at Seaforth were carried out by Comrades Catrina Josling, Sandra Josling, Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith, Eric and Deb Ross. The Lion's Club also held a meeting earlier in the week with a couple dozen Lions enjoying a roast beef dinner. The Branch had Jo -Ann The puck stops here While most of the memorial awards presented by the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association at its year-end banquet at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre last week were based on age group, the Don Higgins Memorial Award is awarded to the best goalie in the association. This year PeeWee Joel Nesbit, right, was presented the award by BBMHA representative Doug McArter. (Denny Scott photo) ..... . The pop tabs are used for a wheelchair program administered by the Elora Branch Legion. The pop cans are collected by the Cadet Corp of Brussels. They use the cans as a means of fundraising for the Corp. The cans can be left at the back of the Legion, preferably on Monday or Tuesday for pick-up by the Corp personnel. They also accept returnable bottles for return. The Branch sends get -well wishes to Comrade Helen Dobson, who is still under the weather.
