$2.4 million in bridge repairs outlined in report
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Morns-Turnberry Council has a
comprehensive list of necessary
repairs and replacements for
municipal bridgeworks in the next
10 years thanks to temporary
Director of Public Works Wray
Wilson.
In a report to council, Wilson
stated that provincial regulations
require that all bridges and culverts
with a span of three metres or more
be reviewed every two years.
Engineering firm B.M. Ross
prepared a report on the bridges of
Morris-Turnberry, highlighting
short-, mid- and long-term projects
that the firm suggest be addressed.
The suggested priority work for
Morris-Turnberry included the
following projects for short term
(one-year) projects:
• Martin Line (site M110) requires
debris removed from the East side of
the North Pier at an estimated cost of
$2,000.
• Abraham Road (site M230)
should be made a single lane bridge
and removing debris from bearing
seats that will cost approximately
$1,000.
• Elevator Line (site M040) should
be made a single lane bridge at an
estimated cost of $1,000.
The total cost of the short-term,
one-year project plan is $4,000 plus
HST.
Medium-term work, scheduled for
a one -to -five-year work period,
include the following bridges:
• Clegg Line (site M190) will
require curb, railing, patch and pier
work for an estimated $415,000.
• Orange Hill Road (site TI10)
will require deck repair, curb repair
and expansion joint replacement for
an estimated $185,000.
• B Line Road (site T030) will
require patch repair, deck work and
seal work for an estimated $160,000.
• Kieffer Line (site T090) will
require curb and joint work as well
as drain work for an estimated
$86,000.
• Jamestown Road (site M250)
requires path repair to the deck of
the bridge and joint sealing for
approximately $70,000.
• Moncrieff Road (site M070) will
require curb and deck repair costing
an estimated $60,00.
• Abraham Road (site M230) will
require support work and
replacement parts for $60,000.
An arresting tune
As part of the annual Walk Through Holy Week event at Blyth churches and Huron Chapel in
Auburn, each church held a service showing a part of Jesus' last earthly week. Blyth United
Church, the second -last stop on the tour, portrayed the garden and arrest scenes. Shown
above is the United Church's choir. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

the gospel and was repeatedly
persecuted himself now: beaten up,
mobbed, even stoned for these new
beliefs. But he felt God's sovereign
grace at work in his life,
transforming him, strengthening
him. He recalls, "But by the grace of
God I am what I am, and his grace to
me was not without effect. No, I
worked harder than all of them
[other apostles] - yet not I, but the
grace of God that was with me."
(1Cor.15:10) Three times in a single
verse grace is highlighted.
"By the grace of God I am what I
am"... Yes, he had been a persecutor
in the past, a violent blasphemer -
but now there was not a shred of
violence in him; he was patient,
didn't react harshly, plodding
steadily along just sharing the Good
News about Jesus with people
wherever he went. God's grace
makes you a new person, gives you a
"do -over" character -wise, so people
notice a positive change - you're
different. Because now you have
(not an Intel processor but) "Jesus
inside". The Holy Spirit helps you
love better, changes your essence, so
you can say with Paul about your
new being, "By God's grace, I am
what I am."
Paul adds, "His grace to me was
not without effect" (v.10) His grace
to me "has not been in vain"
(NRSV), is "not without results"
(NLT). The fruit of the Spirit begins
to take root in our lives, so we act
differently - love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
(Ga1.5:22f). You enjoy being around
people who have those qualities!
And, Paul notes, "I worked harder
than all of them - yet not I, but the
grace of God that was with me."
Who's doing the work here? Paul
says it's not actually him alone, but
God's grace "working through me"
(NLT). Jesus strengthens us. "He
gives strength to the weary and
increases the power of the weak."
(Isaiah 40:29) "I pray that out of his
glorious riches He [God the Father]
may strengthen you with power
through His Spirit in your inner
being..." (Ephesians 3:16) You don't
need to swim across that river
in the direction of temptation:
you've already got something better
inside!
The message of Easter is: "Christ
is risen! He's alive!" His mission
is to indwell His people, so we
know His grace, and can share our
new life in Him with others.
As we take our stand in the truth
of the gospel rather than remaining
stuck in sin, we experience
His positive change inside like
Paul did, and are strengthened

to face life's challenges.
Easter inside us helps us face
temptation when it comes knocking.
F.B. Meyer in The Christ Life for
Your Life suggests the secret has to
do with consciously keeping
ourselves positioned in Christ
through faith. "Remember further
that His purpose is to deliver from
the power of sin. The guilt is gone,
but the power remains, and He can
only deliver from that gradually...
Abide in Jesus. Let the Holy Ghost
in you keep you abiding in Jesus, so
that when Satan comes to knock at
your door, Jesus will go and open it,
and as soon as the devil sees the face
of Christ looking through the door,
he will turn tail"!
