Bedard reports fire activity to Morris-Turnberry
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Slightly less than one quarter of
the total fire calls the Huron East
Fire Department's Brussels station
responded to in 2016 were in
Morris-Turnberry.
Huron East Fire Department Chief
Marty Bedard made his annual
presentation to Morris-Turnberry
Council during its April 4 meeting
and stated that the Brussels station,
which responds to fires in the
southern sections of Morris-
Turnberry, had 41 total calls in 2016.
Of those 41 calls, eight were in
Morris-Turnberry resulting in 14
hours of firefighting service.
That represents a 40 per cent
increase in firefighting hours (14
hours from 10) over 2015 and a one -
call increase from seven in 2015 to
eight in 2016.
Recognition
Prior to his departure from Morris-Turnberry earlier this
year, Fire Prevention Officer James Marshall received his
National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) 1021 Fire
Officer Level IV qualifiaction, the highest in his field.
Marshall returned to Morris-Turnberry for its April 4 council
meeting to receive the certificate from Mayor Paul Gowing,
left. (Denny Scott photo)
Of the calls, four were medical,
three were motor vehicle collisions
and one was a mutual aid call to
assist the Fire Department of North
Huron at a house fire in Bluevale.
Bedard's report indicated that
Morris-Turnberry does not get
charged for mutual aid calls from
Huron East in which the Brussels
station is assisting.
Bedard's report indicated that the
Brussels station had only one fire -
related call that year, an
unauthorized open air burn.
The station responded to zero
vehicle, structure or grass and field
fires throughout 2106.
A break -down of the 41 calls
included 24 medical calls, five
automatic alarms, four mutual aid
calls, one perceived emergency call
and one unauthorized open air burn.
Bedard outlined the training that
the fire department has undertaken
including monthly practices, special
training for some members and the
ongoing efforts to have each
firefighter achieve Level 1 training
according to the International Fire
Service Training Association.
New equipment was purchased for
the fire department including
scheduled personal protective
equipment, the natural gas generator
for the Brussels station and a
"Blitzfire" hose nozzle which allows
for sustained water delivery with
special anchoring options.
As for personnel, two firefighters
left the department while four new
members, Melissa Jacklin, Chris
Riley, Curtis White and Bronson
Bechard, joined the Brussels station.
Captain Doug Sholdice was
awarded his second provincial bar
for 35 years of service. Firefighter
Jason Vandermeer was presented a
certificate and pin for 10 years with
the department and Duane Gibson
retired after 16 years on the job.
Council received Bedard's report.
