Jamestown pre-teenfinds success with football team
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Colby Nicholson has a lot to
celebrate this month as he turned 12
over the weekend and, later this
month, will be playing for a regional
PeeWee football team.
The Jamestown -area pre -teen
started playing football three years
ago in Kitchener for the Predators
and last year the squad went 8-0 and
won the local championship.
This year, Nicholson tried out for
the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge team
in the Minor age group representing
western Ontario, one of the four
regions in the province.
Nicholson made it through the two
tryouts and will take the field with
the team in Hamilton on April 28 to
play a team from Cleveland after
practising twice this month.
The Predators tryouts have started
and the team is looking for more
players in the PeeWee age group.
Nicholson's mother Roxane
explained that the association
provides the equipment for the team
and pre -season games will start next
season with an eight -game season
starting later.
This year, Nicholson is hoping to
also make the defensive line while
continuing on as left tackle on the
offensive line.
When asked what directed him to
football, Nicholson said he was
looking for a spring sport, but didn't
want to play soccer or baseball.
"I watch football on television a
lot so I kind of wanted to play it," he
said. "I play hockey as well."
After deciding he wanted to play
football, finding a team proved to be
difficult. The closest team he could
find was the Predators which plays

Wingham club tries to stay open
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club Board of Directors has decided
to try and keep the club open despite
financial pressures.
At the club's annual general
meeting on April 4, the board
recognized that, with declining
memberships and increased costs to
run the facility, including increased
utility costs, listing the property for
sale may be the final resort for the
group, however members decided to
keep the site open and try to
revitalize it.
"The rising cost of hydro,
declining membership and other
increasing expenses have all
contributed to the financial crisis the
club finds itself in," a press release
from the board said. "Directors and
members of the club have worked
diligently over the past several years
to keep their club operating."
The release later states that, if a
solution can't be found, the directors
and members may have to sell the
club and its assets.
The board decided to continue
some cost-saving and membership
generating efforts that had started
this year as a means of keeping the
site open.
"We're trying to save it if at all
possible," Wayne Waechter, a
representative of the club, said in an
interview with The Citizen. "We're
making changes to operations to try
and make things work"

fundraisers to help it continue
operating and members have reached
out to the community to involve more
people, especially in curling over the
past year.
"Members... promoted curling in
elementary schools in our area,
providing seven curling lessons to
approximately 100 students from
Sacred Heart School and Maitland
River Elementary School," the press
release said. "Students, parents and
teachers were all very enthusiastic. A
local 4-H Club also learned the sport
of curling over a period of six
weeks"
Aside from increasing membership
and community uptake, Waechter
said the club was looking to cut back
operating expenses by having
volunteers involved.
"If we can keep the expenses in
line, we should be able to make it
work," he said. "I'm optimistic that
we can get out of this hole."
He said that volunteers aren't a
problem for the club and if they are
utilized and the word gets out that the
club offers the services and facilities
it does, there is no reason it shouldn't
thrive.
Waechter said the representatives
of the golf course are meeting in the
next week to prepare the course for
the year and plan similar events to try
and involve younger people. He said
discounted lessons and youth and
membership leagues are being
considered as a means of reaching
out.
The course should be open by the
end of the month, according to the
press release.
