Joint Good Friday service to be held in Auburn

LONDESBORO

The Sunday school children and
their helpers paraded down the aisles
of Londesborough United Church on
April 9 shouting "Hosanna!" At the
end of the service they came back
into the sanctuary to give all the
congregants a cross they had made
during their class from palm leaves.
Rev. Terry Fletcher told them that
"Hosanna" means "Lord save Us".
For this Palm Sunday service the
senior choir sang the powerful and
familiar anthem "Open the Gates of
the Temple".
"Crowds and Clamour" was the
title of Rev. Fletcher's message that
morning. His supporting scripture
was Matt. 21:1-11. These verses are
an account of the Palm Sunday
arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem and
the response of the crowds. The
responsive psalm was Psalm 118.
The Israelites were waiting for the
Messiah, the Messiah foretold by
Zachariah. So as Jesus arrived the
crowd, true to crowd mentality, got
quite caught up in the event. This
Messiah was expected to bring
change to their world. And Jesus did.
He was bringing peace to the nation;
Tradition
While other schools may see baseball, hopscotch, jump rope, basketball, playing on the jungle
gym or games of jacks, students at Hullett Central Public School traditionally look to the
soccer fields at recess when the weather warms up like it did on Monday. Shown above are
students enjoying a game of soccer and, yes, many of them were in shorts and t -shirts as the
temperatures soared to 20°C earlier this week. From left: Hayden Lee, Tysen Greidanus,

Jockeying for position
Monday's warm weather saw students enjoying outdoor
recess including Hullett Central Public School's Everett
Cherrey, left, and Jamal Hendricks (Denny Scott photo)
but it was not the change they
wanted. In Biblical times a warrior
bringing war would come on a
horse. Jesus came riding the colt of a
donkey meaning He was coming
with peace.
The Israelites did not want to
accept Jesus as the Son of God and,
typical of crowd mentality, by Good
Friday they were feeling angry and
betrayed and they turned on Him.
We can say they should have known
who He was. Are our lives any
different? We, too, can be deluded
about how our life should play out.
Terry reminded everyone they need
to approach life with hope believing
in God's promises for the journey.
Christians need to be confident in
His presence in our world and not
get caught up in the emotions of the
crowds.
Flowers on the memorial table
were placed in memory of Ange
Chester, granddaughter of Marie
Bromley, who passed away the
preceeding week. Keep her family in
your thoughts as they come to terms
with their loss.
Knox United Church in Auburn
FROM LONDESBORO
will host the joint Good Friday
service at 10:30 a.m. The Sacrament
of Communion will be held at both
churches on Easter Sunday.
Londesborough's UCW will hold
their April meeting on April 17.
Letter to the Editor
LED value questioned
THE EDITOR,
I noticed that last week in The
Citizen you reported on a local
municipality switching to LED
streetlights. I went outside, with the
dog, one night last year and thought
a space ship had landed in the street,
because it was so bright.
It is fine to save power, but the
strength of some of the LED lights is
so extreme that it creates terrible
conditions for the local residents.
I know our living room is now
never dark, even though we have
blinds. If our bedroom were at the
Hullett Carnival set
As if your calendar for the coming
weeks in the Londesborough area
were not filling up already, I noticed
the sign at Hullett Central Public
School announcing that its annual
carnival and auction night is set for
Friday, April 28. You may be
approached for help or contributions
soon. Remember the school is
important to our community.
A date I promised earlier is that
for the electronic recycling
organized by the Huron County 4-H
group. If you have been storing old
TVs, computers/parts and
telephones you can drop them off on
Saturday, April 22 from 7:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. at the parking lot for

FYI — as there is no postal service
on Easter Monday Radford's Farm
Equipment will be closed.
As I work on this column I am
watching/listening to the service
from Vimy. And while looking for
an Easter quote to include, came
across this by Isla Pascal
Richardson: "Do the best you can
with what you possess, Though it
isn't much, yet it could be less. He
invites defeat who gives up to
sighing, Yet the battle is won if you
keep on trying."
I think that sums up what
happened at Vimy.
front of the house, it would be like
living in Alaska in July — 24 hours of
sun. You also cannot look at the light
at night because you get spots in
front of your eyes and it ruins your
night vision.
I received no sympathy from
either the municipality, Central
Huron, or Erie Power, so we are
stuck with this miniature sun on the
street.
Someone should point out to these
energy enthusiasts that there is such
a thing as light pollution. It is
admirable to save power,
considering its cost, but we must be
realistic in the alternatives we
choose.
