Schools coming together
A special concert and mass band featuring area Catholic
schools was held at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School
in Clinton on Thursday, April 6. Bands from St. Mike's
Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, St. James Catholic Elementary School in Seaforth,
Sacred Heart in Wingham, St. Mary's Catholic School in
Goderich and Saint Ambrose Catholic School in Stratford
joined the St. Anne's band for the event. Aside from the
concert and mass band, the day also served as an
opportunity for students to practice in their instrument
sections, like the trombones above, with students from other
schools. (Denny Scott photo)

Signs of spring abound in Walton

WALTON

April showers bring May flowers,
so we should have a blooming good
spring! Snowdrops and crocus are
brightening many lawns and
flowerbeds and the tulips are poking
through the ground in many
flowerbeds and other plants are
thinking of breaking through.
The ditches and streams are
running high with water, so be sure
to keep children away from the fast -
flowing rivers. That was the weather
at the first of the week and then
Thursday night happens and we are
right back into winter. Wet slushy
snow came down with a vengeance
and made for slippery road
conditions and driving Thankfully it
was short lived and the weekend was
great.
Another sign of spring is the
organizing of baseball. The ladies
slo-pitch league held its yearly start-
up meeting with all 13 team
representatives in attendance. There
were a few rule clarifications,
changes to the start date, tournament
date and the tournament money was
collected. The Belgrave team, the
Cosmos was in charge and was very
well organized for the meeting held
at the Brussels Legion. I heard Tri
County has had its meeting and a
couple of other leagues who have
scheduling meetings set for next
week.
Another sign of spring is the
farmers on the land. One early bird
man was planting spring grain last
Monday before the rain started. He
managed to get half of the field done
before the rain came. The other half
will be waiting until the land is dry
again!
We are pleased to report that Ken
Shortreed is coming along very well
after his fall a few months ago.
Unfortunately, Ken managed to have
a gall bladder act up. He was able to
go into hospital in the morning, but
was out again and is home doing
well.
We are sad to hear that Val Gratto
is in hospital in Seaforth with a
broken hip. We hope she has a
speedy recovery and will be home
soon. Glenn Sellers is back to
Braemar and we hope he is coming
along in his recovery.
It must be great for Paul and
Cindy Kerr who have moved into
their newly -built home on Hullett-
McKillop Road. The older home in
front of the new home is now being
dismantled for demolition. We hope
you enjoy your new home!
It is income tax season and just the
right time for scammers to contact
folks on the phone. Bogus callers
claiming to be with Revenue Canada
are contacting people with the threat
to call this number or the sheriff will
be at your door. Revenue Canada
never calls people to demand money.
Be wise be smart and hang up.
The Walton area has a reason to be
proud of a special person and athlete
in Sue Hannon. Although Sue was
not born and raised in Walton, her
mother Donna Watson was, so we
can consider her one of ours! Many
Walton and Brussels area folks will
know Sue from her years of hosting
aerobic classes, exercise classes and
of late, Pilates classes. She has, in
the past, taught at the Walton Hall
and the former Duff's Church.
Sue had the wonderful experience
to participate in the World Masters
Track and Field Games being held in
South Korea in March. She attended
the Canadian Senior, or Master
Games held in Toronto on March
11-12. Sue has focused her efforts
on the high jump and she had her
personal best at the Canadians,
jumping 1.30 metres. She competes
in the 60 -65 age category. A week
later she travelled to South Korea.
Sue finished second for a silver
medal in her category (60-65) in the
world!
She made the trip to South Korea
with her son, Chris, and flew into
Seoul. They spent a few days
sightseeing before taking the high
speed train to the fourth largest city
in the south, Daegu. They were there
for four nights for the competition
and Sue reports that the event is run
with the same ceremony and
pageantry as the Olympics. Opening
ceremonies and closing ceremonies
were very impressive, with all the
athletes marching in and out.
Congratulations to Sue on her
achievements. Sue is planning on
continuing her training in high jump
as well as adding a second event to
her agenda. Sue is hoping she will be
able to continue to compete and
hopes to go to Spain for next year's
competition. Just a note to add, that
most of the athletes pay their own
expenses to attend the competition.
Sue also reports that a 90 -year-old
woman captured six gold medals in
the running, speed -walking track
events!
Welcome back to Gary and Kelly
McNichol who have returned from a
winter retreat in Florida. They report
they had great weather but it is
always nice to come home.
Welcome home to Judy Emmrich.
She has been away for a week
attending to her position in the
Postal Union. She has been in
London for daily meetings and
hopefully a little relax time. Judy
Lee and Jo -Ann McDonald have
been filling in for her on the mail.
Welcome home.
The Cranbrook Dart club held
their final game of the season on
March 29 and had 20 players out to
shoot. Team 2 of Teuni Smith, Rob
Vanderveen and John Gillis claimed
five games, along with, of course,
our long-standing duo of Ern
Lewington and Brad Speiran with
five games. Kathy Workman was
surprised with a high shot of 124,
while Brad hit 153.
The group gathered for the final
time to end the season with a roast
beef dinner at Blyth Maple Creek
Farm and enjoyed a social time. The
top scorers all season were Teuni
Smith and Kathy Workman, tied for
first place with 124. The men had
Murray Houston with the top score
of 180 and was awarded a dart
trophy and a picture to show his
great accomplishment after many,
many years of play. They have a
great bunch of players and can
always use a few more to join the
fun. The Gillis couple appreciate
everyone's help from blowing snow,
regulating heat, cleaning chores and
providing snacks each week and
hope to see everyone back next year.
They wish all a good spring, summer
and harvest!
Welcome back to Paul and Cheryl
Ryan who spent a few weeks in
Arizona. They had some of their
southwestern Ontario biking friends
FROM WALTON
join them for a fun time. They take
the motorcycles and spend days
investigating the surrounding areas
on the bikes.
Returning from a southern
vacation are Steve and Marni
Knight. They spent a week at the
Amber Green Resort in Punta Cana,
Dominican Republic. They had a
great time and great weather, even a
little too hot a couple of days. They
went on a boat tour that included
snorkelling. Steve reports that the
coral was beautiful and brightly
coloured fish were plentiful.
Happy Easter to all and we hope
you enjoy the time with family and
maybe some time to catch up with
some outside work.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Colleen McCallum
