Goverage of Vimy celebrations shows battle's importance
A NOTE FROM BETTY

There's a saying that if we forget
our history, we'll probably repeat the
mistakes. This goes for families,
communities and countries. The
mental health folk talk about sharing
stories with our offspring, letting
them know that you too have made
mistakes and didn't always have
things together. Feeling of
hopelessness can be lifted
sometimes when you know that
those around you have made it
through some bumpy times in life.
So share the stories of real life.
The 100th anniversary of the battle
at Vimy Ridge has been well
remembered this month. Each article
and commentator has a different take
on events, but it is clear that the four
Canadian Units fighting for the ridge
changed history. Details have been
shared, families are more aware and
the organization and leadership for
the battle have been acknowledged.
The ceremony to mark the 100th
anniversary was on the battle site,
Cacophony before symphony
St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School in Clinton hosted a special concert and mass band
performance on Thursday, April 6. The day started with workshops for individual instrument
sections, a mass band practice, shown above being lead by St. Anne's music teacher Josh
Geddis, and the concert afterwards. Bands from St. Mike's Catholic Secondary School in
Stratford, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. James Catholic Elementary School in Seaforth,
Sacred Heart in Wingham, St. Mary's Catholic School in Goderich and Saint Ambrose
Catholic School in Stratford joined the St. Anne's band for the event. (Dennyscottphoto)
At the Branch
No branch euchre, dance for Easter
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It was a busy night at the Brussels
Legion Branch on Thursday evening
with the Thursday night darts having
their final night of play and the
ladies slo-pitch league meeting. The
darters had a dozen folks enjoy the
evening of fun games, prizes and
snacks. The winners of the fun
games of darts was Sandra Josling,
with Roger McHardy and Marlene
Rutledge taking second. The high
shot was by Lawrence Machan
hitting 124. The dart season will
resume in October.
Prizes for the year were presented
to the deserving darters: men's high,
Lawrence Machan, 101; ladies'
high, Sheron Stadelmann, 105;
men's high shot, Jim Brown, 171;
ladies' high shot, Sheron and Sandra
Josling, 140; most starts over 60,
men, Lawrence and ladies, Marlene
Rutledge; high starts, men, Wayne
Smith and Gord Jacklin, 92; most
starts prize went to John Stadelmann
and Deb Burch; most finishes, Gord
and Sheron; most skunks prize, tied,
Betty Ann Smith and Jim Brown and
after breaking the tie, Jim Brown
was the loser receiving the skunk
gnome to look after until next year.
The District convention was held
in Elmira on the weekend. Comrades
Jo -Ann McDonald, Eric Ross, John
Lowe, Glenn Bridge, Deb Ross and
Deb Cann spent time attending
meetings over the course of the
weekend. Our own Comrade Eric
Ross was elected as Deputy District
Commander for the next two years.
Congratulations Eric.
Sunday, April 9 was the 100th
anniversary of the battle of Vimy
Ridge. It was during the first World
War and the battle was a decisive
victory in turning back the German
Army. It was the first and last time
that all four Canadian Divisions
would assault together. Thousands
of Canadian soldiers advanced on
the ridge and almost 4,000 soldiers
lost their lives and 3,700 more were
wounded. The battle has since been
known for Canada as the "birth of
the Nation". The monument built by
the Canadian government on the
cliffs of Vimy stands as a memorial
for all. Many make the pilgrimage to
Vimy and stand at the base of the
memorial and feel the weight of
history, the echoes of the clash of
battle and the faint voices of those
who served and sacrificed. It is for
all to remember them. Lest we
forget.
We wish everyone a Happy Easter
and remind folks there is no
Saturday euchre or Sunday dance
this week. The Branch will be closed
Good Friday.

now the Vimy Memorial. The
televised version was great, so I
cannot imagine the thrill of being
there. Ten thousand students were
there showing the enthusiasm for life
that comes with youth. Each had a
story connecting them to the history,
they had done their homework and
were in awe of the whole situation.
They knew details and the impact on
young lives as soldier, pilot, parent,
lover or child. It was felt.
Connecting history with today was
right there.
A recent read of The Stone Angel
had me seeing the monument, not as
just a very impressive remembrance,
but as the fight for our Canada.
The battle is our history, the
struggle to build, the talks and
negotiations, the outline of a dream
and all the fragilities in life.
Eloquent speeches talked about the
Canada that we have today is a direct
link to our history of enthusiasm,
fortitude, negotiation and good will.
0 Canada!
Holy week is here and this event
lets us remember things from the
past. Fun, food, parades and parties
started the week for Jesus and the
followers of the time. Then, like
today, power, jealousy, distrust and
details muddied life. And like all
stories, we have a favourite part,
depending on your thoughts of the
moment. Easter is new life. We all
get many new beginnings along our
way. Learning from history once
again can keep us from letting the
bullies run the world and
acknowledging that each one of us
has a hand/mind in how our world
turns out.
Enjoy the fine weather of spring
and have a blessed Easter.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Correction
In a description of a photo in the
April 6 edition of The Citizen, the
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
Choir was misidentified as the
Brussels United Church Choir.
The event the group was
performing at was also misidentified
as the first annual Spring Songfest
concert when it was the second
annual.
The Citizen apologizes for the
errors.
