From the Minister's Study Jesus is determined toVersteeg or fe rovidp you: By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel As we approach Easter, a word comes to mind that describes the mood or atmosphere around Jesus. That word is "determined". Luke 9:51 says, "when the days were approaching for Him to be taken up (i.e. death and resurrection), He was determined to go to Jerusalem." The books of Matthew and Mark add that at this time Jesus very clearly began to explain to those who were with Him that He was going up to Jerusalem to die and rise again. "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man (Jesus) will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death ... they will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again" (Mark 10: 33-34). To be determined to do something means that you have drive. Sometimes we say that nothing can get in our way if we really want to do something. We have some little children at home who can be quite determined to do what they think is best. Sometimes they are determined to overcome any obstacle in their way to get what they want. In a good sense that is the way it was with Jesus as He approached the time of His death and resurrection. It was like nothing could get in his way. Nothing could distract Him and His plans were firmly in place. About 700 years before Jesus appeared, the prophet Isaiah prophesied of Jesus' suffering and resurrection saying that 'His face was set like flint' to go to Jerusalem (Isaiah 50:7). This verse in Isaiah also mentions that Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem knowing that He also would be vindicated for His suffering. There would be a great reward for His suffering. I think it is the measure of worth or benefit that sets the bar of determination. Generally our level of determination is set by the benefit that we will receive or the worth we associate with it. If I hear of a grand treasure buried on an island I might be very determined to go search for it knowing that if I found it I would be instantly rich. Our motivations and our level of determination are often born out of self-interest. In this respect Jesus was much different than we are. Jesus' determination was born out of love; not for Himself but for His Heavenly Father, and for the people who belong to His Heavenly Father. Jesus loved His Heavenly Father and His love motivated Him to determine to do what His Father asked of Him. In John 14:31 Jesus said, "so that BRUSSELS the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me" He spoke this in the context of His suffering and death on the cross. Because Jesus loved the Father, Jesus also loved those who belong to His heavenly Father. The Scriptures teach us that He loved them and determined to die for them so that they would be with Him and His Father in Heaven forever. John 13:1 says, "...having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end." This display of determination motivated by love is the greatest display of love the world has ever seen. But the amazing part of this act of love is that it is not only a display of Jesus's love, it is also a display and an invitation of love to us from God the Father. 1 John. 4:10 says, United Church WORSHIP SERVICE AND SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00 am Brussels Ministerial Holy Week Services details in "Coming Events" Good Friday Service 9:30 a.m. April 14th Everyone welcome Minister: Rev.
