A quarter-century
David Sparling of Blyth, centre, retired after 25 years as a firefighter last Friday and a special
ceremony was held in his honour at the Emergency Services Training Centre. Rick Finnemore,

Kregar said Sparling's dedication to
the department, even on the road,
blew him away. After coming back
late to the hotel after a night out,
Kregar said he was ready for bed
only to find that Sparling was still
up, even at the late hour,
studying and ensuring that
residents paying taxes to fund
the department got their money's
worth for the services the
fire department provided to them.
He said he hoped to one day be as
dedicated to the department as
Sparling was, saying he inspired him
to be a better firefighter.
Rick Finnemore, a Fire Protection
Advisor with the Ontario Fire
Marshal's office, said he could
clearly see that Sparling was an
appreciated member of the
community, both as a firefighter and
as a citizen.
"It's clear that David is another
one of the great chiefs in the
province," Finnemore said. "You're
part of the living history of this
community."
Sparling also spoke glowingly
about the Emergency Services
Training Centre, saying that he and
his staff have done a lot of work in
an effort to make the centre live up
to its potential and he hopes that
trend will continue.

British Columbia
man faces charges
A 38 -year-old man from British
Columbia is facing charges of
Speeding & Over 80 following a
traffic stop that took place in
the early morning on March 30 in
Blyth.
At approximately 2 a.m. a Huron
County Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) officer observed a Toyota
Rav4 travelling southbound on
London Road through the village of
Belgrave. The officer followed the
vehicle and noticed the driver was at
times driving well below the speed
limit and then well above it. The
officer continued to follow the Rav4
and at one point the speed of the
Rav4 accelerated to a speed in
excess of 130 kilometres per hours
in a posted 90 kilometres per hour
zone.
Upon entering Blyth, the officer
initiated a traffic stop and the
driver pulled over without incident.
While speaking with the male
driver the investigating officer
detected the odour of alcohol
coming from the driver. As a
result a demand was made for the
driver to provide a sample of his
breath into a roadside screening
device.
The driver complied and
registered a fail. At that point he was
placed under arrest and transported
to the Huron OPP Detachment
where he provided two samples of
his breath to a qualified intoxilizer
technician. Both of his samples
registered over the legal limit.
As a result the suspect from
Surrey, British Columbia has been
charged with Drive Motor Vehicle
with Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol
and Speeding. He has been released
from custody with a court
appearance scheduled for April 10 at
the Ontario Court of Justice in
Goderich. He also received an
automatic 90 -day driver's licence
suspension and his rental vehicle has
been impounded for seven days.
