At the Branch
If music is good for the soul, the
folks around here had lots of
opportunity to feed their souls over
the past week. Music does positive
things to our brains and
sets in motion good reactions.
Hopefully all this good stuff will
stick around.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
recreation board folks held a ladies'
night last week that was very well
received. For many it was hearing
Adam Cousins with his guitar and
his very fine voice telling stories in
song. Others were most impressed
with Dr. Sumar from Clinton and her
sharing of knowledge that was most
appropriate. Nicole Noble, Abi
Corbett and recreation friends had
things under control in the
hospitality department with snacks
and drinks ready.
Branch hosts public speaking
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week began at the Brussels
Legion Branch with the general
meeting being held on Tuesday
evening. There were 11 members of
the executive attending and no other
Comrades from the Branch.
Comrades are always welcome and
encouraged to attend the general
meetings so they can contribute to
the decision-making process of the
Branch. Donations were passed and
reports from committee chairs were
heard.
Elections will be held at the April
meeting and new faces are wanted to
help fill the executive. There are a
few people retiring from the
executive and new Comrades are
needed. Contact the Branch,
Comrade Deb Ross or Jamie
Mitchell to volunteer to serve. Our
veterans served their country and
now we ask that members serve their
Branch.
We send our get -well wishes to
Comrade Don Martin who has
suffered some health issues. We
hope he is improving. We are glad to
hear Comrade Helen Dobson is
home again from hospital. We hope
she is improving and is enjoying
being home.
The Thursday night darts had 11
players out to play. Winners were:
first, Roger McHardy and Penny
Reynolds; second, Sandra Josling;
high, John Stadelmann and Sandra
Josling, 140.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 15 tables of players hoping to
take home top prize. Winners were:
first, Clem and Kathy, 72; second
and third prize, split, Ann and Doug
and Mae Ritchie and Lillian
Appleby, 68; lone hands, Earl and
Jean Foster, six; low, Murray and
Henk, 47. The group decided not to
have euchre on Easter weekend so
the next date is April 29.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of almost 80 people
enjoying the music of the Tri -
Country band. The mild weather
made for good driving and some
folks who haven't been out during
the winter were in attendance. Nice
to see everyone out again!
The Branch hosted the district
public speaking competition on
Sunday afternoon. The event was
chaired by District Youth Chairman
Comrade John Lowe. There were 15
youth from Kitchener, Wingham,
Chatsworth, Walkerton, Stratford,
Port Elgin, Hanover, Ripley Huron,
Guelph, Elora and Goderich
participating. They were the winners
from the zone competition held
earlier.
Local speakers from Wingham did
very well and captured first place
in the primary and junior divisions.
Congratulations to James Speer
and his speech "Adults Say the
Weirdest Things" and to Austin
Bieman and his speech
"Grandparents". Both students go to
Maitland Elementary School.
Comrade Nanci Ducharme, Youth
Chairman of Branch 218,
represented the Branch and
welcomed all to the facility.

Silent auction items and several
vendors made for interesting
browsing and a smooth way to
support the recreation
programs here. So it was a good
night.
Music for Sunday afternoon came
from the Blyth Festival Singers.
"Around the World in Song" offered
celebration of Canada, and the rest
of the world. Succinct explanations
of each song made the enjoyment so
much better. Some familiar like,
"After the War", "We Rise Again",
"Song for the Mira" or new to me,
"The Royal Hudson" and "All the
Little Rivers" were all presented in
excellent form and made for easy
listening.
This choir has offered a variety of
music to its members and the public
since 1980. So thanks for a great
afternoon — it is good to watch
people really enjoying the music
they offer.
Springtime Songfest was held at
the Brussels United Church on
Sunday. The Brussels Ministerial
organized the evening to showcase
the talents of the local church choirs.
It was a good time to see the
diversity of music available to small
choirs and how each choir leader
handled things.
Lively hymns let the audience
stretch and sing several times
between the choir offerings. A mass
choir blended the many voices for a
great way to end an evening of song.
This was the first spring sing — a
Christmas one has been held for
several years, but from comments
and enjoyment, I think it's a keeper.
Offering received supports work in
our community that this group is
very aware of and tries to assist as
able.
So, hurray for music and all the
positive things that come because of
it.
Holy week is next, check out the
details for services, bake sales and
celebrations.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
