Wingham
man gets
six months
at home
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Matthew Cameron of Wingham
must spend the next six months at
home as part of a conditional
sentence handed down to him in
Wingham court on March 23.
Cameron pled guilty to charges of
possession of stolen property under
$5,000, mischief under $5,000,
threatening to damage property,
breach of probation and failing to
comply with the terms of his
probation and failing to appear in
court.
Crown Attorney Jonny Melo told
Judge R.G.E. Hunter that on Aug.
26, 2015, the landlord at Cameron's
building had been investigating the
theft of four security cameras at the
property and asking that they be
returned.
Melo said that Cameron returned
two of the four cameras and with
that, the landlord said he would then
be charging Cameron for
outstanding rent payments, which
led to a dispute. During the dispute,
Cameron threatened to damage the
cameras, a threat he would later
make good when he spray -painted
the lens.
In January, 2016, Cameron also
failed to report to Wingham Police
and it was at that time that he was
found to be in possession of a stolen
bicycle. On Nov. 17, 2016, Cameron
was further charged when he failed
to appear in Wingham court.
Cameron pled guilty to all
charges.
Hunter sentenced Cameron to a
six-month sentence, conditional
upon him staying in his home and
only leaving for the purposes of
work, medical appointments or to
run errands between 12-4 p.m. on
Saturdays.
He then further sentenced
Cameron to 12 months probation to
begin once his house arrest term had
been completed. He also ordered
Cameron to pay a fine of $1 per
conviction and complete 30 hours of
community service.
A handful of other charges against
Cameron were then marked as
withdrawn. Hunter instructed
Cameron that if he was found
breaking the terms of his house
arrest in the next six months, the
remainder of the sentence would be
served in jail.
