Brussels birthday club holds bash PEOPLE AROUND WALTON One of many Members of the Huron OPP detachment took on firefighters from the Huron East Fire Department on Saturday, all in an effort to raise some funds for Victim Services of Huron County. The Ice Hogs (the Huron OPP) bested the Smoke Eaters (the Huron East firefighters) by a score of 9-3, but the day was all about having fun and bringing attention to an important service in Huron County. (Vicky Bremner photo) By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 March is the most unpredictable month for weather it seems. Warm one day, cold the next, rainy then snowy, gloomy then sunny, calm then gale force winds. The temperatures go up and down. Don't forget the fog! In like a lamb, out like a lion. Who knows? Sounds like a mild week ahead, but until we live through it, who knows? It must be confusing for the wildlife. Flocks of tundra swans are still landing around the area as they journey north. Pairs of Canada geese can be seen, looking for a place to nest. There are raccoons, groundhogs, bunnies, cats and skunks that have forgotten how to cross the road. The one thing that I have seen very few of is robins. I know they are here, but we do not have them around our house it seems. Our condolences to the family of Rene Vercruyssen on his passing. He will missed by his wife Jennie and children Ron, Evelyn and John and their families. Rene was a farmer at heart and raised pigeons for many years. A good neighbour and friend to the McDonalds. Our sympathies to all. We are pleased to report that Huron East to purchase plow By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen As part of the 2017 Huron East budget process, the public works department will be purchasing a new five -ton plow truck demonstrator unit. During earlier drafts of the budget, pieces of equipment had been cut from the public works budget. As a cost-saving measure councillors had wondered about purchasing a demonstrator plow truck. At the March 21 council meeting, Public Works Manager Barry Mills submitted a recommendation for an International 7600, complete with body and plow, for just over $250,000 plus HST. Mills told councillors that the municipality would be getting good value for its dollar because companies put their best foot forward in demonstrators meant for trade shows. Council approved the recommendation and the purchase, which comes with a one-year warranty with unlimited kilometres. If a problem should arise, the unit could be serviced in Goderich, Mill said. Council has accepted the tender of Kurtis Smith Excavating Inc. for the reconstruction of Winnipeg Road, Toronto Boulevard and Regina Road in Vanastra.
