North Huron welcomes Ladner at council meeting A new dawn It was the dawn of a new era Monday night as North Huron Council officially introduced Ryan Ladner, second from right, to the community as the new chief of the Fire Department of North Huron and the head of the Emergency Services Training Centre in Blyth. Outgoing Fire Chief David Sparling, right, has blessed the hire and thinks Ladner will do a great job. "Around the World in Song" is the of two Blyth Festival Singers concerts that will incorporate a sesquicentennial theme this year. The popular dinner cabaret concert and auction is also coming up on Saturday, May 27 at the Stanley Township Hall. Entitled "Huron Shores and Beyond" it will feature guest musicians who will bring an eclectic blend of acoustic folk, bluegrass, celtic and country to the Canada celebrations! The Blyth Festival Singers is a mixed community choir under the professional direction of Sharon Poelstra with Jill Wright as accompanist. Choir members come from all areas of Huron County and have worked to develop a high standard of performance in various repertoires, under the umbrella of the Blyth Centre for the Arts. The sky's the limit At the annual Brussels Optimists' spring dinner and auction, tables of guests were challenged to build the tallest wooden -stick -and -marshmallow structure and it was Doug Koch, left, and Neil Warwick, centre, who would prevail. Optimist Tyler Deitner did the measuring to ensure their victory was legitimate. (Vicky Bremner photo) Continued from page 1 redefined by North Huron. This will allow the new fire chief additional time to focus on the fire department and the ESTC. "Under Chief Sparling's leadership, the Fire Department of North Huron (FDNH) has become one of the most respected fire services in Ontario and it is my goal to continue with this success," Ladner said in the same press release. "I am honoured to accept this position and look forward to working with and supporting the volunteer firefighters that proudly serve the community." Sparling said North Huron made the right choice in using former Fire Chief Phil Eagleson as a consultant on the hiring process and that he felt Ladner was the right choice for the position. Sparling said he has had a great three -and -a -half years as chief and enjoyed working with North Huron council, its partner municipalities and, most of all, his fellow firefighters. "I'm fortunate to have outstanding people underneath me," he said. "It's been a really rewarding three -and -a - half years" Sparling said he would be "next door" to Ladner, speaking about his plans to work for the Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company, and said he would be available for help if it was necessary.
