WALTON

Well, it is back to normal and back
to school. The children were excited
to see their friends again or maybe it
was to go back to school. There were
a variety of events that children
enjoyed such as tubing in St. Mary's,
going to Laser World, hockey
tournaments, having birthday
parties, staying at Grandma's, or just
staying at home!
We now enter the final stretch of
the school year, another 15 weeks,
Fun and games
Ron Prout, left, and Ron Clarkson participated in a tower
building competition using dowling and marshmallows at
the Brussels Optimists Spring Dinner and Auction event at
the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on
Saturday night. Participants were asked to build the tallest
free-standing tower possible using only the materials
provided. (Vicky Bremner photo)
with a few holidays and PD days, to
enjoy. Time will fly especially when
the "good and warm" weather
arrives.
Returning from holidays is Judy
Emmrich. She joined Doug and
Sherri Howatt and friend Doris
Fielder for a trip to a warmer
climate. They went to Paradise
Village Resort at Neuva Vallarta,
Mexico. They had an absolutely
fantastic time and if laughter is the
best medicine, they report they
laughed all the time. Great time,
great food and good friends is
always a winning combination!
A couple of born and bred Huron
County boys are home from the west
for a visit with other family
members. Alec and Art Glanville are
home for a visit. They are staying at
Les Glanville's near Lucknow, but I
am sure they will be seen frequently
around Walton and Seaforth area.
They will have to visit brother
Lloyd Glanville at the Seaforth
Hospital as he is a patient there at
this time. We hope he is soon home
and feeling better.
Having a fantastic holiday with 10
friends were Matt and Cheryl Lee.
They travelled to Punta Cana,
Dominican Republic for a week's
holiday. They enjoyed lots of sun,
sand, surf, song and silly fun for a
great time with friends. They had
overall good weather with a couple
of days of light rain and lots of wind,
but a good time was had by all.
The Walton Hall was rented on the
weekend for a bridal shower. It was
held for a member of the Whalen
family and was the perfect setting
for the crowd. The Walton Hall is
available for rent. Check the number
on the side of the building for the
contact number.
We have Jean Bridge in Seaforth
Hospital at this time and we hope
she is feeling better and is soon
home.
Our condolences are expressed to
the family of the late Isabel
Bremner. She will be missed by her
daughters Joan, Brenda, Kathy,
Mary, Donna and Karen and their
families. Isabel and her late husband
Bob were residents of Ethel for
many years. They were a
community -minded couple and
always a pleasure to talk with. Isabel
had been living at the Ritz Villa in
Mitchell and I had the opportunity to
speak with her every time I went to
see my mother there. Our
sympathies to the Bremner family.
Enjoying a vacation in Florida was
a family affair for the John Braecker
family. John and Karen, along with
daughters Holly and friend Blake

Letter to the Editor
Golding recalls closure of base
THE EDITOR,
As we are now into March, I
remember the saddest day of my 42 -
year military career. It was on the
last Friday in March, 1972 when I,
as Base Commander of CFB
Clinton, gave the order "Lower the
flags" which meant the closing of
CFB Clinton. At about 4 p.m. on a
grey day I was "piped" unto a
deserted parade square by Clinton
Piper Hector Kingswell. The flags
were lowered and encased in their
leather carrying cases and were sent
off to CFB London (Wolseley
Barracks) where they were laid up
until they were required sometime in
the future.
Later on I chatted with Publisher
Keith Roulston, who was a reporter
for the Clinton News Record at the
time. Keith told me words that I have
never forgotten. They were "Frank,
it is the end of an era.
We will never see this again in our
lifetime."
He was so right. I never gave that
order again.
And now the end of the story. On
April 1, 1972, I reported to National
Defence Headquarters Ottawa for
assignment on a special project
which lasted three months. I then
reported to Camp Ipperwash to take
up my duties as Deputy Commander
of the Camp. I retired in September
1983.

meaningful change. She also said
that it will be crucial in gathering
data from younger residents and
what they're looking for in their
communities.
Lass told council that no number
of skate parks or infrastructure will
help keep young people in a town.
She said that young people will
return to their hometown if they feel
as though they've "left something
behind", so creating a community
that makes young people miss it
when they're gone is essential.
Lass said that local school boards,
with the help of the Ministry of
Education, will begin rolling out the
program later this year with the help
of local schools, staff and teachers.
Trevor Townsend, spent holiday
time at the home of Bruno and Joyce
Braecker. They had a wonderful time
and did some sightseeing before
returning home.
Congratulations to Don and Susan
McNeil on celebrating their 50th
wedding anniversary. They were
joined by family members for a
celebratory meal at The Keg.
We are happy to hear that Emerson
Mitchell is home again to Huronlea
from hospital. We hope he is doing
well and is out and about soon.
There was a great crowd attending
the "party" for Adam Braecker and
Roxanne Murray at the Seaforth
Agriplex on Saturday evening. The
bridal party had a meal at the home
of John and Karen Braecker prior to
the evening's fun. It was a great
evening for all.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had a
new winner for the season on
Wednesday evening. Murray
Houston hit triple 20 three times for
the high score of 180 points. Good
job Murray! Teuni Smith was happy
with her high shot of 124 for the
ladies. The group had to mix up the
teams again this past week because
of so many away or ill. George Zwep
and Pat Gillis managed to win five
games and Brad Speiran and Frank
Workman also won five games. It
was a good night even with the

smaller crowd. Maybe this week will
see a full house!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Griffin Verkley, Ray
Huether Jr., Celeste Ryan, Cora
Alcock, McKinley Ryan, Don
Chesher, Jim Lee, Art McNaughton,
Eric Steinman, Carol Henderson,
Keith Wilbee, Geoffrey Bauer, John
Gillis, Kennedy Ann Huether, Cathy
Regele and Brandi Williamson.
Happy birthday to all.
An important evening
The Brussels Optimists Spring Dinner and Auction was held
at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on
Saturday evening. One of the guest speakers was Nicole
Jutzi who spoke on her work with the Wingham Hospital
Foundation. (Vicky Bremner photo)
