Coultes to share El Salvador trip with WI, guests At the Women's Institute meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the basement of Knox United Church, Yvonne Coultes will speak on her trip to El Salvador. Bring a bag lunch. Everyone is welcome. The community extends sincere sympathy to Neil Olson in the loss of a dear wife, Ruth Olson who passed away on March 2. Sympathy is also extended to Joanne Olson and Brian Heard, Jeff Olson and Mickey Howes, and Mark and Nicole Olson in the loss of their mother. The Listowel Curling Club played host to the 2017 Mixed Doubles Curling Provincial Championship on Feb. 24-26. There were 16 of Southern Ontario's finest tandems taking part in the relatively new format, which is set to make its debut in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Shawn and Katie Cottrill of Belgrave took part with a 3-3 record in the tournament but were eliminated from the playoffs with a 7-4 loss. Doug Walker greeted worshippers and handed out the bulletins at Knox United Church on Sunday, March 12. Brian Hymers welcomed the congregation on Lent 2. He lit the Christ candle. Our journey through this Lenten season causes us to learn more about ourselves and God being with us. He also lit a candle for Howard Walker to let the family know that our thoughts and prayers are with them in their loss of Howard. The welcoming hymn "Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life" was sung. The call to worship was read responsively followed by the choir anthem. "Para, Para, Pitter Pat" was the children's hymn followed by children's time. Brian referred to St. Patrick's Day on March 17 and special celebrations taking place. At different events, people would hold a sign up with John 3:16. The Lenten journey is all about signs. Elly Dow read scripture from Genesis 12:1-4, Psalm 121 responsively with the congregation and John 3:1-17. Brian reflected on the second week of Lent. It is time to test our faith. We enter into the spirit of God through baptism and faith and partake in the Lord's Supper. One must be born again to have a relationship with God. Let Christ enter into your soul. Reach out and grasp it. Enjoy the life that God promises to you this Easter season. After the Hymn of Response, Doreen Marks gave the Minute for Missions, "Help for Refugees". Doug Walker and Don Shiell took up the offering which was dedicated. The closing hymn "Jesus Calls WMS speaker talks on refugees The Huron -Perth WMS Presbyterial held its annual meeting at Knox Presbyterian Church, Listowel on Tuesday Feb. 7. The theme for the day was "Mission Minded -An Attitude of Mission." Ruth Hart the president opened the meeting followed by the welcome from Knox minister Rev. Don McCallum and also words of welcome from Robina Alexander, president of the WMS Listowel. Hymn "Come Sing 0 Church in Joy" was then sung. Ruth Hart gave prayer followed meditation. The WMS Purpose was repeated in unison followed by the minutes of the 2016 annual meeting. Secretaries from the committees gave their yearly reports consisting of what each WMS Group had accomplished in 2016. The nominations report was given by Willie Drost and Shirley Aitcheson installed the 2017 executive. In Memoriam was given by St. Marys Friendship Auxiliary WMS, remembering our members who passed away during the year. Devotions were by St. Andrew's PCW . The afternoon speaker was Amber Heidman. In her presentation "Refugees", she told us about their experience from the time the refugee family was picked up at the airport in Toronto to arriving in Listowel and getting them settled in. Roll Call "One way your group's vision has changed" was answered by each group present. Courtesies were given by Avonton Evening Auxiliary with announcements following. The hymn "Christ You Call Us All to Service" was sung and prayer closed the meeting The officers for 2017 will be: Past -President, Mary Duffin; President, Ruth Hart; First Vice- President,Willy Drost; Secretary, Ethel Corry; Treasurer, Lois Kipfer and Corresponding Secretary, Bessie Hounsell. Us", benediction and blessing "Go Now In Peace"concluded the worship service. Brian said "grace" and everyone adjourned to the basement for lunch and fellowship. Larry and Barb Harper gave an interesting presentation on their experiences building homes in El Salvador.
