Hoggart discusses beef market decline Continued from page 11 (RMP) is a good program that is designed to mitigate this loss, but it's expected the program will fall short of $65 million. To prevent a disruption to the beef supply chain, the Beef Farmers of Ontario are asking the government to implement an emergency relief top -up in the amount of $65 million. Lobb said with federal government in deficit and having spent its money and more, it's highly unlikely such a top -up would occur. He suggested beef farmers capitalize on the Canada -European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and become "inventive" about opportunities to supply markets in Europe. • Ontario Sheep: The RMP is vital to the long-term viability of the sheep industry, stated the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency Report. Also, the right to protect livestock from predatory attack is a critical issue for sheep farmers to be able to protect livestock from predator attacks. From April, 2015 to March, 2016, 1,563 sheep were injured or killed by predators in Ontario. "If these lambs were able to be marketed, it would have generated $2.3 million in economic activity for the province," stated the report. "Instead, the province paid out $337,229 in compensation" • HCFA Farm Finance Committee: The committee thanked Thompson for bringing Dianne Saxe, the Ontario Environment Commissioner to the riding to tour the county. The issue of dyed diesel was discussed as Saxe has stated dyed diesel was "subsidized" and should be eliminated. However, the issue has become a non -issue thanks to MPPs being educated about the need for affordable farm fuels. • Huron County Egg Farmers: Consumption of eggs is up 5.4 per cent in January, 2017 versus a year earlier which marks 10 consecutive years of growth in shell egg consumption. However, Ontario will be short of birds to meet the demand by over 750,000 birds stated the Huron County Egg Farmers report. Grading stations will attempt to cover the shortfall in shell eggs with U.S. imports allowing "economic activity to slip away." Thompson said she's open to ideas and that she and the provincial government were keen to learn about barriers to growth and how to help egg farmers grow to meet that demand. • Huron County Dairy Committee: There are 3,705 dairy farms in Ontario and they have had a great year with substantial growth in the market which has resulted in a 15 per cent quota increase. Also, the investment of Gay Lea into the Teeswater plant has been great for the surrounding community. Lobb agreed, saying Gay Lea is a good reminder of the value of co- operation and community. In the closing remarks, Howick Reeve Art Versteeg said he's been coming to the forum for many years and said agriculture has always been the economic driver of the county and it's imperative politicians don't add unnecessary bureaucracy that could impede that. "We are fortunate to have Ben Lobb and Lisa Thompson here because they both understand agriculture and I know not every county has that," said North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent.
