(Denny Scott photo) Council rejects committee suggestion, supports IPM By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron East Council has voted to supply a number of services to the International Plowing Match (IPM), which will be held in Walton this September. At council's March 7 meeting, the matter was up for discussion with three members of the IPM executive, Brian McGavin, Matt Townsend and Paul Dodds, in attendance. Mayor Bernie MacLellan advised council that when the Ontario Plowmen's Association (OPA) and IPM executive became aware of the Administration Committee's recommendation to council to charge the IPM the normal building permit feeds for tents and a flat rate of $5,000 for water, sewage treatment and landfill costs, concerns had been raised about the additional cost to the IPM. He further explained that the requests for different services were coming in on an as -needed basis and there were different expectations and miscommunications by all parties involved. The OPA has a number of expectations of the municipality and gives the municipality hosting partner status for the event. MacLellan said it's unfortunate that all the expectations are not in a handbook for both the municipality and the local IPM committees to follow. As a hosting partner, Huron East will receive recognition on printed posters, show booklets, official publications and the sponsorship park. A representative can also then bring greetings on behalf of the municipality at the match and Huron East will receive two exhibitor spaces during the IPM. He told Townsend, McGavin and Dodds, however, that Huron East was keen to work with them and was willing to help wherever it was possible for the municipality to do so. Townsend told councillors that is the IPM executive's hope too - that the two partners can work well together going forward and that Huron East would remain a hosting partner for the match going forward. Townsend told council that he hopes Huron East will be able to host a profitable match - in fact, one of the most profitable in the history of the match. Council passed a motion to reject the recommendation from the Administration Committee and passed a motion to donate services to the IPM this fall with little discussion. Correction In last week's issue of The Citizen, Gerald Ryan was misidentified in our Countdown to IPM 2017 story about the Dalton and Ryan families. Cheryl Ryan's father-in-law is Gerald Ryan. He is one of the many landowners leasing his land to the International Plowing Match this September. The Citizen regrets the error. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 2017. PAGE 7. Flu season hurts dart attendance PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Here we are in the middle of March Break and it feels like the middle of winter. We started March off like a lamb with warm and sunny days, but it looks like the lion is winning by mid -month. We can hope things will change before the end of the month. It is March Break for the school children, teachers and bus drivers! Going to Grandma's, Great Wolf Lodge and "nothing" were plans overheard from some kids. Whatever they do, we hope they have some fun and find something interesting to do. Rick and I have become grandparents for the fifth time. Our daughter Kelly and husband Adam have welcomed Elaina Ann to their family. She has very excited big brothers Connor and Owen who can hardly wait for her to play with them! Congratulations to our McDonald/Jarosz family! I have been down helping Kelly with the boys because it is March Break and they are only little for such a short time. Great -Grandma Donna Fisher was happy to tell me about her latest granddaughter. Proud parents are Josh and Jess Jorritsma and they have welcomed Elsy Lynn to the family. Big sisters Alice and Solena are happy to welcome their new sister. Grandparents are Klaus and Shelley Jorristma. We send our speedy recovery wishes to Edith Pipe who has had a knee replacement. She is receiving tender loving care from her sister Dorothy Thompson during her recovery. We send our get well and full recovery wishes to Darlene Fisher as she suffered a life-threatening aneurysm. Thankfully, her condition was diagnosed quickly and she was sent to a London Hospital. She underwent surgery and is recovering nicely and was hoping to be home last weekend. The Cranbrook Dart Club had 17 players out on March 1, another cold and snowy night. Brad Speiran and Ern Lewington did not break their record, but still took five games. Three other teams were lucky with four games. They consisted of Murray Houston and Marita LeFor, Karen Bowles and George Zwep and Rita Bowers and Frank Workman. Sometimes it is tough or tricky, to get out to finish a game. Murray Houston was the high man with 135 and Pat Gillis the high lady with 93. Holidays, illness and meetings kept the numbers down for the week and the next week of March 8 was not any better. Only 14 players were able to attend with the cold/ flu being the number one reason for absence. Team two of John Gillis and Teuni Smith captured five games and Brad Speiran, playing alone, also won five games. Murray Houston had to play alone and had four wins and captured high shot of 133. Marita LeFor shot high lady with 93. We hope everyone is recovered soon so they can come out and enjoy the final three weeks of darts. Jim and Leona Armstrong, along with other members of the Armstrong family from the area, had the pleasure of attending a wedding on Saturday, March 11. Their granddaughter Brittney, was married in Port Hope to Nick. Brittney is the daughter of Robert and Lynn Armstrong. Returning from a vacation in Florida are Ron and Betty McCallum. They had family join them at different times and we hope they enjoyed their break.
