AN Lent in full swing, St. Patrick's coming A NOTE FROM BETTY One yummy tradition Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Pancake Tuesday, is best recognized by having breakfast for dinner. Just ask Don Scrimgeour, shown above at right, who was dished out some pancakes and sausage by Rev. Allan and Marianne Livingstone at St. John's Anglican Church in Brussels. (Denny Scott photo) At the Branch Speer excels at public speaking The week began with the Brussels Lion's Club hosting its meeting at the Branch. They had a nice crowd of around 25 to enjoy the ham and scalloped potato dinner. Helping for the Branch were Linda Bird, Judy Lee and Deb Cann. The general meeting was held Tuesday evening with 13 Comrades attending. The normal business was conducted. Members were reminded that elections will be held in April, so a committee was struck to determine who will be serving on the executive for 2017-19. If there are any Comrades who wish to serve the Branch as a member of the executive, please contact the Branch or Comrades Deb Ross or Jamie Mitchell. The Thursday night darts had 10 darters out to play. The first -place team was John and Sheron Stadelmann. Second place was Ron Schmidt and Sandra Josling. The high shot was by Ron hitting 140. The final meat draw and wing night will be held this weekend for St. Patrick's Day. Come out and support the Branch as it continues to fundraise to complete the projects of the Branch. The two young people who advanced to zone public speaking in Kincardine on Saturday did a very good job. Hailey Beuermann was the runner-up in the Primary section of speakers and Ella Smith was the runner-up in the Junior section. Great job girls and thanks for a job well done. A young man with history from Brussels was the winner of the Primary section. James Speer, son of Margaret (Jarvis) Speer, grandson of Mary and Frank Stretton, will advance to District competition in April, to be held in Brussels. He was representing the Wingham Legion and Maitland River Elementary School. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 14 1/2 tables of players at play. The first -place team was Mary and Joan with 73 points. A tie for second between teams of Lois and Millie and team Mae Ritchie and Lillian Appleby with 70 points split second and third prize. The lone hand prize went to Agnes and Eileen with six. The low score of 48 points was earned by Murray and Hank. Saturday evening had a wonderful party to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of John and Jean Sutcliffe. They had a great crowd for the dancing, visiting and food for a delightful evening. Working for the Branch were Linda Bird, Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville, Nanci Ducharme, Deb Cann and Sharon Robbins. Congratulations to the Sutcliffes! The Sunday night dance had a nice crowd enjoy the music of the Sunshine Country Band. (Denny Scott photo) Brussels Legion St. Patty's Meat Draws and Wing Night Saturday, March 11 from 5-8 pm Hundreds of dollars in meat prizes including a Mega Meat Draw By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Oh, how Canadian, we're talking about the weather again. Snow and road conditions are the hot topic this week. It actually feels good to have snow in March, leaving something to look forward to as the time moves along, Garden shows are being advertised lately, giving hope to the many gardeners that spring is coming soon. Bulbs of several varieties are ready for your garden, in red and white, to celebrate Canada's 150th. Lots of ways to tell the world we're celebrating, theme flags are also ready to fly. Visits to the garden shows offer a glimpse of hope and a great way to dream through March. We're into Lent, we've had the pancakes and the preparations are underway. Biblically we are in the 40 days before Easter. Lots of things need to be prepared for Christians to celebrate Easter. Easter is the reason we get so excited about the Baby from Bethlehem. Don't you find it's often the story after an event that has the impact. In Lent it's a time to seriously look at your life, is this the best you can do? Is it time you take stock of your days and see where improvement could happen. One tradition is to give something up for Lent. Others take time to ponder items in their life that bring joy. Whatever works, so that this time of Lent is spent being thankful and mindful of your life. It's time to dig out your St. Patrick's Day clothes and get your jig up to par. The music will make you want to dance, so get ready to do your best and let the Irish in you out. Take care of yourself. Bye now. Betty G.W.
