Lions consider pool restoration over splash pad
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
The Blyth Lions Club has put
plans to construct a new splash pad
at the Lions Park on hold with a
number of new factors now in play.
At the club's Feb. 23 meeting, Ken
Stewart of the Lions Park
Improvement Committee presented
a report to Lions Club members
present at the club's regular meeting.
He said that after talking with village
residents, a number of club members
had heard that those with children
would prefer the status quo of a
wading pool in Blyth, as opposed to
a splash pad, which was being
considered.
Stewart, however, said that the
status quo is not currently an option,
because the pool is leaking.
If members of the public would
prefer a pool, he said, the Lions
could do that, but improvements
would need to be made to the pool to
stop the leak. How much that would
cost and what exactly is causing the
problem, he said, has yet to be
determined.
At the meeting, the Lions decided
to undertake a sonic x-ray of the
pool and its surrounding grounds to
identify the source of the leak and to
then obtain a quotation for how
much it would cost to repair.
The sonic x-ray won't be possible
until the park's ground dries. Once
that has been completed and the
results are presented to the club, he
said, then members can decide how
to proceed.
Furthermore, several Lions felt
that with a price tag of over
$100,000 for a basic splash pad, that
money could potentially be better
spent on capital upgrades to the
park, including playground
equipment, landscaping, new
washrooms, the clubhouse, the
parking lot, signage, fencing and
tree -planting. This is all in addition
to the planned construction of a
picnic pavilion later this year.
Long-time Lion John Stewart told
members that the upgrades being
discussed would not involve club
members working together on a
Saturday to clean up the park or do
some painting. What's being
Sawchuk spearheads accessibility initiative
Addressing a problem
Blyth -area resident Julie Sawchuk wants to help local
businesses become more accessible through the StopGap
ramp placement program. (Denny Scott photo)
Julie Sawchuk of Blyth has
received North Huron Council's
support in her drive to make Blyth
and Wingham's business cores more
accessible.
Sawchuk is a teacher from F.E.
Madill Secondary School who was
paralyzed from the chest down when
she was struck by a vehicle while
cycling on County Road 25 two
years ago. She explained, at
council's Feb. 21 meeting, that
teaching is her first passion and her
new passion is accessibility and the
project she was bringing to council
was an amalgam of the two passions.
The StopGap community ramp
project allows business owners the
opportunity to make their stores
accessible without major
renovations. Movable, wooden
ramps are custom-built for each
specific business and can be brought
out whenever an individual with
mobility needs wants to enter into
the store.
"StopGap has built over 600
ramps since they started in 2014,"
Sawchuk explained. "There are over

Sawchuk said the ramps would be

The Lions Club voted to authorize

As for whether the Lions will

decision will be made until results of
the pool sonic x-ray are made

With perfect wisdom, at the right time, in the
right way!
(J.C. Ryle)
"He has done all things well!" Mark 7:37
The truth of these words is full of deep and unspeakable comfort, and
ought to be daily remembered by all true Christians.
Let us remember it as we look back over the days past of our lives, from
the hour of our conversion. In the first bringing us out of darkness into
marvelous light -- in humbling us and teaching us our weakness, guilt,
and folly -- in stripping us of our idols, and choosing all our portions -- in
placing us where we are, and giving us what we have -- how well
everything has been done! How great is the mercy that we have not had
our own way! "He has done all things well!"
Let us remember it as we look forward to the days yet to come. We know
not what they may be -- bright or dark, many or few. But we know that we
are in the hands of Him who does all things well. He will not err in any
of His dealings with us. He will take away and give -- He will afflict and
bereave -- He will move and He will settle -- with perfect wisdom, at the
right time, in the right way! The great Shepherd of the sheep makes no
mistakes! He leads every lamb of His flock by the right way to the city of
habitation. "He has done all things well!"
We shall never see the full beauty of these words until the resurrection
morning. We shall then look back over our lives, and know the meaning
of everything that happened from first to last. We shall remember all the
way by which we were led, and confess that all was "well done." The why
and the wherefore, the causes and the reasons of everything which now
perplexes us -- will then be as clear and plain as the sun at noon -day. We
shall wonder at our own past blindness, and marvel that we could ever
have doubted our Lord's love. Truly, "He has done all things well!"
"Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face. Now we know
in part, but then shall we know even as we are known" 1 Corinthians
