Organizations aim to tackle homeless men problem A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Oh my, my, spring weather in February. It certainly is weird, with snow not being part of the landscape of this very short month. So for the moment we can enjoy the tundra swans spotted on the Newry Road on the weekend or the new growth of hostas peeping through in some sheltered flower beds. And of course we'll be accepting when the white flakes fly again, as I'm sure they will. We know we are a privileged group with food, shelter and clean water as part of our everyday life. The television lets us know that many do not have those luxuries here in Canada. For many it is a surprise that we have homeless folk in Huron County. Many we do not see, as their friends and acquaintances offer assistance in this Lifetime memberships The Brussels Legion honoured four Comrades with lifetime memberships during a special awards and honours presentation conducted by Branch President Jo -Ann McDonald on Saturday. From left: Zone Commander Eric Ross, Cecil Moore, George Adams, Forrest (Bush) Whittard, Charles Procter and McDonald. (Vicky Bremner photo) At the Branch rough spot. Couch surfing is their option. For anyone with company on a regular basis, this is not a long- term solution and soon reality hits again. Several agencies, county staff and area churches were aware of the number of men in a homeless state. With much co-operation, study and discernment, a program has begun at lakeshore United Church in Goderich. Like all lasting programs, things need to start slow so that issues can be handled and trust built. This is a unique and needed program for our area. Committed folks from many walks of life have set things up, tried things out and are ready to share the news. Starting Jan. 20, we now have an "Out of the Cold" project in Goderich, a referral spot, a new place to volunteer and a place to offer moral and financial support. With all that in mind, mark your calendar now for next Saturday night at Lakeshore United at 7:30 p.m. You'll enjoy the music of two-time Juno nominee Maria Dunn. Her claim to fame is her songs of love. Songs that tell of "community, family, humanity and the love that connects us and fires our actions to make the world a better place" Sounds like a good match for the new project. Hope to see you there. Free-will offering and I'm sure cheques would be accepted too, as you help in a way we can.
