The Brussels Lions Club's most recent effort to raise funds for renovations at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre was a successful one, with hundreds of people making
their way through the centre's doors on Sunday and leaving happy and no longer hungry
thanks to the Lions. The meal coincided with free public skating at the arena, which many area
families decided to take in. (Denny Scott photo)
Huron East nixes
private garden
Huron East Council has decided
against allowing two Seaforth
homeowners exclusive access to a
former snow lot for purposes of a
private garden.
At its Feb. 7 meeting, council
voted to keep the status quo and
ordered the men to remove fruit trees
they had planted on the property
after lease negotiations broke down.
The issue was first before council
last year when the men and their
lawyer spoke to council about a
verbal arrangement that had been
made with Chief Administrative
Officer Brad Knight when they
bought the house. After the buyers'
real estate agent told them they
would be able to plant a garden in
the empty lot adjacent to their
backyard, the men proceeded to get
permission from Knight.
However, as Knight reported to
council last year, the two parties'
expectations of what a "garden"
entailed were very different. Knight
told council that he envisioned a
small vegetable garden consisting of
just a few dozen square feet. When
Obituaries
the men had planted a number of
fruit trees and clearly planned on
using much of the property as a
garden, they had exceeded Knight's
expectations.
The property had previously been
used as a snow storage lot in the
winter by the municipality's public
works department. However, it
hadn't been used for that purpose in
recent years and had just been sitting
unused.
When the issue was first
brought to council, several
councillors were sympathetic to the
men and directed staff to draft a
lease that would make their use of
the property official. However, at the
Feb. 7 meeting, several neighbours
had voiced their discontent and legal
advice had shown the agreement to
be less than ideal and councillors
voted to end any usage by the men
altogether.
Several complications, along with
complaints from nearby neighbours,
were enough to convince councillors
to end the agreement, which council
did by way of a vote.
