Walton main street blocked for chimney fire

WALTON

Happy Valentine's Day to all and
we hope you enjoyed your special
day. As I write on this Sunday
evening, it is snowing and blowing
and quite nasty outside. Glad I am
snuggled on the couch with my
blanket, writing about the weather
and not out in it!
The village of Walton congested
on Saturday morning when
firetrucks arrived at a home on the
main drag. The road was blocked off
as they proceeded to fight a chimney
fire. There were no injuries but a lot
of smoke and now the mess to deal
with. Just a reminder to all who burn
wood, to check their chimneys on a
regular basis.
Welcome home to Lorne and
Bonnie Glanville who have returned
from Alberta. They were out to
Edmonton to visit with son Paul,
who is in the rehabilitation hospital.
He was in a serious accident at the
end of November and had major
injuries to his lower torso. They are
working hard on his rehab and all the
Walton area relatives are sending
good thoughts for his recovery.
It is the time for holidays and
many local folks have been away
enjoying a warmer climate. Heading
to the Dominican Republic for a
week were Geoff and Michelle
Dalton. Steve and Christie
Carnochan were in Playa del Camen,
Mexico for a week and Jeff and Erin
Robinson were Jamaica bound. Greg
and Sharon Wilson were also in
Dominican, Fred and Heidi McClure
in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
and Brett, Mel, Caden and Harper
Lee were in Florida. I hope great
weather was enjoyed by all and by
the many pictures posted, I am going
to guess it was. Sun and fun for all!
The Cranbrook dart crew had very
different weather braving the cold
and ice last Wednesday for their
night of play. There were 19 players
braving the night to play. Top
players for the night were Brad
Speiran and Ern Lewington again,
winning five games. Kathy
Workman shot her all time high of
101! Wow! George Zwep was the
high man shooting 132 and Gail
Speiran hit the night's lucky shot.
There was a surprise gathering of
nieces and nephews and great nieces
and nephews, plus one sister-in-law,
for Marg Rogerson's 85th birthday,
at Clinton United Church on
Sunday. There were 10 there to
surprise Marg and attend church
with her. Birthday cake and ice
cream was served to all following
the service to celebrate. The group of
10 then went to Boston Pizza in
Goderich to enjoy lunch. The group
members travelled from Port Elgin,
Guelph, London, Walton, Winthrop
and Vancouver to celebrate with
Marg. Following lunch, everyone
headed home with the threat of the
upcoming nasty weather, on its way.
Happy birthday Marg or to the
family Aunt Peg!
We are glad to hear Nora
Stephenson is home again and
daughter Joan gives the two thumbs
up on how she is doing. We are glad
she has come along so well, and
when there is a little less snow and
ice, I am sure she will be on the
streets again!
Neil McDonald is here from
Vancouver for a week's holiday. I
think he will spend most of his time
dealing with snow, but Vancouver
has had a lot, so I guess he is used to
it now. He arrived to celebrate Aunt
Peg's birthday on Sunday and will
catch up with a few other family and
friends.
Celebrating his 85th birthday with
family on Sunday was Jack Knight.
A lovely party was held at the home
of his son, Brad and his wife
Christine Knight in Mitchell. Jack's
Committee unrest results in no changes
Huron East Council turned down a
proposal to change the way council
members are appointed to
committees after one councillor was
upset he was left off a committee.
Councillor Ray Chartrand, who
was extremely upset after Mayor
Bernie MacLellan removed him
from the Vanastra Recreation
Committee, proposed the change,
which would be similar to the Huron
County Council striking committee
model, rather than the current
model, which is just a decision made
by the mayor.
Chartrand also suggested that
under his proposed system,
committees could be struck in the
six weeks between the election and
the first council meeting, ensuring
that committees are staffed in time
for that first meeting. He also
suggested that councillors stay on
committees for their full four-year
term of council, rather than being re-
evaluated every two years to ensure
councillors cycle through different
appointments throughout the
municipality.
While Chartrand said that he had
consulted extensively with his
fellow councillors and other civilian
An CENTg
committee members, council was
not sympathetic to his cause and felt
that the system was fine as is.
Deputy -Mayor Joe Steffler said
that Chartrand, with his displeasure
over the Vanastra Recreation
Committee situation, had an issue
and it was resolved by way of a
bylaw. Other than that one situation,
he said, the system had been running
smoothly and there was no need to
change it.
Councillor Alvin McLellan
agreed, saying that he felt there
wasn't anything wrong with what
the mayor did in moving Chartrand
off of the committee. His only
criticism, he said, was that the
communication between the mayor
and councillors could be improved.
If councillors are going to be
removed from a committee,
McLellan said, they should receive a
heads -up from the mayor.
Councillor Dianne Diehl agreed,
saying that an e-mail from the mayor
notifying councillors of changes
would be nice.
Chartrand's motion asked that an
appointment committee be formed
ahead of the 2018 election. His
motion, however, was defeated.
son Steve and his wife Marnie and
his brothers and sisters all attended,
including Jim and Dona, Leslie and
Yvonne, Ken, Murray and Sylvia,
Dorothy and Peter, Helen, Harold
and Gerry and Brenda Wheeler and
Wanda and Milton Dietz. They
enjoyed lots of food, laughter and
good times. Happy birthday Jack!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Ken Shortreed, Sydney
Warwick, Brent Wilkinson, Mike
Alexander, Sheila Bauer, Kendra
Warwick, Weldon Black, Maleah
Taylor, Brady Dalton, Joyce Tipple,
Christine Lee, Marg Rogerson, Mary
Baan, John McCall MacBain, Barry
Skinner and Valentine's babies
include Betty Glanville, Krista
Fraser, Val Pethick, Gary McNichol,
Betty Graber Watson. Also
celebrating were Jack Knight, Keith
Clark, Connor Driscoll and Hayden
Lee. Happy birthday to all.
