Melville
Guild
meets
The January meeting of the
Melville Presbyterian Church Guild
and W.M.S. was held at the home of
Jeanne Kirkby on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
A delicious potluck supper was
enjoyed by all.
The meeting opened with
everyone repeating the W.M.S.
Purpose, followed by the singing of
the hymn "Standing at the Portal".
Leona Armstrong led in prayer and
read the minutes of the November
meeting. It was moved by Elaine
Armstrong, seconded by Jeanne
Kirkby that the minutes be approved
as read. The correspondence
included thank you cards from
Mary Davidson and Allan Edgar for
the poinsettias they received at
Christmas and thank you cards from
Lucy Hesse and Edith Pipe and
family for the lovely lunch that was
served following the funerals of
Bob Hesse and John Pipe.
Alice Marks gave the Guild

and the Sunshine Fund.
The roll call was answered by
telling what your plans were for
Family Day. Janet Haertel gave a
reading about sending valentines.
The president reminded members
that they are invited to attend the
Walton Women's Institute meeting
to be held at Margaret Mclnroy's
home on March 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Positions for the Executive for
2017/18 were discussed along with
ideas for programs for the coming
year.
As our meeting was National Flag
Day, Lucy Hesse handed out a
Canadian flag to each member. On
Feb. 15, 1965 Canada's national flag
was raised for the first time on
Parliament Hill and in 1996
Parliament declared Feb. 15
National Flag of Canada Day. Lucy
also handed out generation pedigree
charts to be filled out and given to
Kathy Bridge to put in the
Tweedsmuir books.
In keeping with the Family Day
theme, Lucy read a couple of
short stories. The singing of 0'
Canada and the institute grace
closed the meeting. A tasty lunch
was provided by Janet Haertel,
Bonnie Lindsay and Leona
Armstrong. Happy Birthday to the
great organization was sung as the
candles on the cupcakes were lit.
The Majestic Women's Institute
met in the community room at the
Brussels Library on Jan. 11 at 1:30
p.m. As the meeting was on stress
management, president Yvonne
Knight opened the meeting with
some quotes about stress from a
farm magazine.
The Institute Ode was sung
followed by the repeating of the
Mary Stewart Collect. Secretary
Leona Armstrong read the
November and December minutes
followed by several pieces of
correspondence including thanks
from shut-in box recipients. It was
decided that we give $75 towards the
purchase of gifts for the ladies' tent
at the International Plowing Match
in September and $75 towards fair
prizes at the Brussels Fall Fair. Lucy
Hesse thanked everyone for food,
cards and hugs at the time of her
husband, Bob's, passing.
Congratulations were in order for
Yvonne Knight and Lucy Hesse as
their story will be printed in the
book entitled Ordinary to
Extraordinary.
Ruth Bauer gave the District
Director's report. Tickets are
available for the district lunch
and euchre in Listowel on Feb. 15.
This will be a party to celebrate
the 120th anniversary of the
Women's Institute. Anyone wanting
a ticket, contact Yvonne Knight.
The roll call was answered by
telling what you enjoyed doing to
relax. Some answers were — read a
book, knit, play familiar tunes on the
piano, work on puzzles, make quilts
and do crafts.
Leona Armstrong told the
group that stress was a part of
everyone's life. It can be a good
thing — a little stress can heighten
your senses and productivity.
However, too much stress can create
or worsen physical and emotional
problems. Four common causes of
stress are insecurity, a demanding
routine, interpersonal conflicts or a
traumatic experience. Seventeen
tips were suggested that could help
manage stress in their life. For
example — talk things out. Talking
about whatever is bothering you
with a trusted friend can help clear
your mind; exercise regularly, eat
right. Foods high in protein,
Vitamin C, B and A can protect
you from the effects of stress;
develop a realistic, positive
attitude.
