study gains steam
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
The possibility of a regional
recreation study is growing after a
promising meeting with the
provincial government and the
participation of all municipalities.
At the Feb. 8 meeting of Huron
County Council, Bluewater Mayor
Tyler Hessel, the architect of the
study, said he spoke to a
representative of the provincial
government at the recent Rural
Ontario Municipal Association
(ROMA) conference in Toronto and
the results were positive.
Hessel told council that there was
significant interest in the study at the
provincial level. He did add,
however, that it seemed as though
the province would be more likely to
completely fund the study if all
lower -tier municipalities were to be
involved.
Prior to the presentation, it had
been reported that all Huron County
lower -tier municipalities were in
favour of the study with the
exception of Goderich. Hessel said
that the provincial government had
certainly made it clear that it would
be more likely to completely fund
the study if it were to be county-
wide.
Goderich Deputy -Mayor Jim
Donnelly said that Hessel and the
rest of the lower -tier municipalities
could count on Goderich's
involvement in the study.
Hessel had originally raised the
topic with the neighbouring
municipalities of Central Huron and
Huron East, but then expanded it to
be county -wide. He hopes that the
study will begin with an inventory of
infrastructure for all municipalities
and then proceed to a further
understanding of recreation costs
throughout the county.
He had spoken about the study to
Huron County Council before,
saying that a new approach to
funding recreation is required and
that new programming and higher
levels of co-operation were needed,
given the ever -rising costs
associated with arenas and hydro in
rural Ontario.
No action on the study was taken
by council, but information on the
potential study and its funding
sources are likely to return to
council at a future meeting.
Fighting hard
Despite a reprieve on Saturday when the Blyth Brussels
Atom Rep Crusaders posted the first win in their best of five
series against the South Bruce Blades, the Crusaders were
eliminated on Monday night three games to one. (Shawn

Belgrave centre doors
approved by council
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
North Huron Township Council
has approved the replacement of the
Belgrave Community Centre's main
floor doors but not before reminding
the centre's board that such projects
should go through council first.
During council's Feb. 6 meeting,
Director of Recreation and Facilities
Pat Newson reported the board had
purchased new doors to replace the
existing doors. The new doors are
more accessible and, without the
centre divider the existing doors
have, will allow for the centre's
upper floor to have bigger
equipment more easily moved in and
out of the structure.
The project will cost an estimated
$12,240 according to the board,
which will be covered by funds the
board has put in reserve for capital
projects.
In her report to council, Newson
explained that the doors would be
replaced prior to the East Wawanosh
150th anniversary event this year.
She said the board had started the
project prior to receiving council
approval and the project was delayed
as staff had to consult after the doors
had been purchased. The lease
agreement that the board operates
under, as North Huron owns the
facility, states that any capital
building improvements must be
approved for by council.
Newson reported the doors will
meet accessibility requirements. She
recommended, in her report, that
council send a letter to the board
reminding them of the terms of its
lease. She outlined how North
Huron staff can help with capital
projects thanks to specialized
knowledge of documents like
the Ontario Accessibility Act,
with which the doors needs to
comply.
Council approved New son's
motion to approve the new doors and
send a letter to the board reminding
them of the requirements of the
lease.

A stay
After losing the first two games of the series against the South Bruce Blades, the Blyth
Brussels Atom Rep Crusaders won their Saturday game at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre by a score of 2-1. The team was down 1-0 going into the third period but
two quick goals put them on top to extend the series. The teams played again Monday night
in Teeswater and the Crusaders lost 5-3 which marked the end of their series. (Shawn Loughlin
