World Day of Prayer approaching
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Feb. 12, were Terry
Richmond and Lorie Falconer,
ushering were Hope Button and
Marilyn Craig. Marilyn Scott was
organist, Katie Dockstader was choir
director and Fred Hakkers ran the
power point. Cheryl Cronin
welcomed everyone to church and
drew everyone's attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin.
World Day of Prayer is on
Saturday, March 4, and Rev. Gary
Clark is guest speaker. The first
hymn "Draw the Circle Wide" was
sung followed by the prayer
of approach said responsively
with the sign language in
the response.
Rev. Gary Clark invited everyone
to greet one another. The choir sang
the anthem "It Only Takes a Spark
(Pass It On)." The scripture reading
was from Luke 10:25-37, the story
of the Good Samaritan.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time. Rev.
Clark asked them if they knew the
song "It's a Beautiful Day in the
Neighbourhood." Mr. Rogers
opened his TV show every morning
with this song back in the day. Most
kids didn't recognize it. He then
asked the children what a neighbour
was? Most thought a neighbour was
someone living beside them. Rev.
Clark explained to them that
neighbours are everywhere. Jesus
tells us in the scriptures to be
neighbours of everyone. The
children along with the congregation
said a prayer and went down stairs
for their time of fellowship. The
congregation sang the hymn "We
Are Pilgrims."
Rev. Clark's message to the
congregation was "Re -defining
Neighbourhood." Neighbours are
others besides those who live close
to us. He quoted Professor Marilyn
Salmon who thought that the lawyer
respected Jesus and Jesus respected
him. In the scriptures, the lawyer
asks Jesus who his neighbour is?
Jesus asks the lawyer who he
thought his neighbours were? The
lawyer thought that his neighbours
were kind and loving. Jesus tells him
to go out and do what the Good
Samaritan did.
In Bible times to justify
themselves was for God to see them
with grace and love and it is the
same today. Professor Salmon
decided to role play the story of the
Good Samaritan. She took the part
of the person who had been beaten.
She thought of how she felt when
she had been shunned. The Jews in
Jesus' time did not associate with the
Samaritans and so they walked by.
The stranger had mercy for the
person lying on the road and bound
his wounds and took him to a place
for his wounds to heal.
The story of the Good Samaritan
is clear. It is good to give but also
good to receive.
The hymn "When I Needed a
Neighbour" was sung. The offering
was received followed by the
offertory response "In Gratitude and
Humble Trust," the offertory prayer,
the prayers for the people, silent
prayer and the singing of the Lord's
Prayer. The last hymn "What a
Friend We Have in Jesus" was
followed by the benediction and the
singing of the response "Amen,
Hallelujah".
Rev. Clark said grace before
everyone went downstairs for a
delicious lunch of beef or pulled
pork on a bun, cabbage salad and
cake and ice cream which everyone
enjoyed.
Hands up, everyone who has a Bible!
(Charles Spurgeon)
"His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and
night!" Psalm 1:2
If I were to say, "Hands up, everyone who has a Bible!" --everybody's
hands here would go up, as I suppose that nobody here is without a Bible.
But if I were to ask, "How many here, as a habit and delight, meditate upon
the Scriptures?" --I wonder how many hands would be raised? Well, I will
not ask you that question, but let everybody ask it for himself and judge
himself concerning it in the sight of God.
Lord, give us a Bible reading, Bible loving people!
