Food Grains Bank
event well received
A NOTE FROM BETTY
Wings and things
The Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion welcomed 60 people to its wing night and
meat draw on the weekend. There were 22 meat prizes, including the mega prize that was
taken home by Linda Bird, up for grabs that night. Shown is President Jo -Ann McDonald

Meat draw gives out 22 prizes

Happy Valentine's Day to all. We
hope everyone enjoyed the day and
it has brightened the "stormy-ness"
of winter. The Branch tried to
brighten the lives of many by
hosting wings and meat draws on
Saturday evening. There were close
to 60 out for the evening and all
hoped to be winners.
The 22 meat prizes had many
happy and the mega prize made
Linda Bird very happy. She had
spent the night in the kitchen
cooking so was very pleased to go
home the big winner. Others taking
home meat prizes included Sandra
Josling, Donna Bauer, Hilary
Machan, Chris Brown, Karen
Bowles, Doug Koch, Sharon
Rapson, Sherry Baker, Nanci
Ducharme, Deb Ross and Michelle
McNichol. There will be a St.
Patrick's Day meat draw, so watch
for details and come out and
celebrate at the Legion.
The Thursday night dart league
had just eight darters out for the
night. The weather has not helped
the turnout these days. The first
place went to Sandra Josling and
second place went to Jim Brown.
High shots were by Jim hitting 133,
Gord Jacklin 131 and Sandra 120.
The Branch had several darters
participating in district dart play on
Saturday. Ron Schmidt placed third
in the singles competition and in
team play, Eric Ross, Mark
Campbell, Tyler VerBeek and Ryan
Shaw placed third. The men will
advance to provincial play in Port
Credit in March. Congrats to the five
Comrades who excelled at the dart
competition.
Comrades are asked to mark Feb.
26 as a day to come to the Branch. It
will be honours and awards,
initiation and special presentations
made to Comrades. We hope to see a
good turnout.
Centenaires start playoff run
The Huron East Centenaries'
2017 championship run started off
on the right foot with a 6-5 win over
the Elora Rocks over the weekend in
the second round of the WOAA
Senior 'A' hockey championships.
After receiving a bye for the first
round of the playoffs, the
Centenaires hosted Elora for the first
time ever.
The team had finished in first
place in the 'A' division with a 10-10
record, netting them 20 points.
The bye afforded an important
break for the team after a whirlwind,
three -game tour.
"Guys at this level love hockey but
they have to balance hockey with
work and family as well." said
Centenaries President Bill Tremeer.
"Last weekend's bye, especially
after the grueling week, was an
opportunity to recharge to make a
strong push into the playoffs and
bring home a championship to
Seaforth"
Elora played a tough best -of -five
series against the Shelburne
Muskies, requiring overtime
in the final game to take the
series 3-2.
"The Elora, Shelburne series was
pretty close and very exciting
hockey." said Centenaires GM Tim
McNaughton.
The Centenaries next take on
Elora on the road on Friday, Feb. 17
at 8:30 p.m. Game three is set for
Seaforth on on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.

There have been lots of things to
celebrate this week.
To start, Queen Elizabeth has now
passed 65 years as Queen of
England and the Commonwealth.
Victoria is her closest contender and
so the two great ladies of England
have shown the world a lot of good
things: stability, dignity, stamina and
class to name a few. So Elizabeth
continues to show the world that age
is but a number and that
effectiveness remains the goal of all
jobs well done. Long live the Queen.
The census numbers are out,
showing that the population of
Canada stands at 35,151,728. My,
my, that's a lot of people. Our
growth is number one in the G7
grouping, showing the world what
we already know - this is a pretty
fine place to live. The other bit that
was not a surprise is that 83 percent
of the people live in the city, mainly
Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.
So there we are, over 35 million live
in this great land.
The Canadian Food Grains Bank
folks were celebrating on Sunday
when Beth Earl showed the
supporters just what can be done
with Ontario food. Right now she's
saying I didn't do it all, so thanks go
to Audrey, Shirley, Bob and
Marguerite and anonymous dessert
makers for a great meal for a good
cause. When you think that
food/agriculture aid is given to 40
countries with the proceeds of meals
like this, cheques from service clubs
and produce from fields all across
Canada, it feels pretty good to be
part of this really big deal. Another
proud -to -be Canadian moment.
I hope you remembered to tell
your sweetheart how important they
are in your life on Tuesday. It's not
too late. Flowers and food say it so
well.
Bye now & Take care
Betty G.W.
