Gusso said, after the recent thaw in early January, he found himself faced with something he didn't expect. "I was walking outside my front door and I found two [hypodermic] needles outside of my front door," he said. "I called a police officer, and he said to look out for suspicious activity. It was an upsetting experience." Gusso, during the BIA's Feb. 1 meeting, said it led to some conversations with his five-year-old daughter Georgia that he would have preferred to have with her later in life. "There has to be some landlord responsibility in regards to having people stay in Blyth that are in a rentable house or flat," he said. "The landlords should do a little more research in regards to who they are bringing into Blyth and what's in their background." Gusso said if a person is a known drug user, there should be some thought given as to whether they will fit into the community. Several members of the BIA executive told Gusso that there are rules about what decisions can go into allowing a renter to occupy a property. There were also comments to the fact that, once a renter is in a property, it can be very difficult to evict him/her. Gusso said he was "gobsmacked" by the situation and something had to be done "to get the community back" Councillor Bill Knott, North Huron's representative on the BIA, said the solution is for people to stop being passive about the situation. "We have to stop sitting back and phone the police," he said. "The only way we can have an increase in any kind of pass-bys or patrols is if it's provable and the only way it's provable is if you report it." Knott said the OPP will only increase presence if it's warranted which is indicated by higher numbers of incidents. Cat O'Donnell, Blyth BIA executive and co-owner of The Wonky Frog art studio, said things have changed in the village recently, pointing to break-ins at the Blyth Laundromat resulting in a change to its hours. She encouraged people to be wary of individuals doing suspicious things in the community and to not hesitate to contact the authorities.
