North Huron Museum future called into question
The future of the North Huron
Museum was brought into a question
for the second time in seven months
due to a letter concerning proposed
changes to the facility.
Verna Steffler sent a letter to
council and had planned on
addressing council on Jan. 23 during
its meeting, however, it was decided
that Steffler would first meet with
North Huron staff and have the issue
brought back to council at a later
date.
Her letter suggested changing over
part of the North Huron Museum to
a specialized area called, in her
letter, the Alice Munro Centre. She
also suggested having a tea room
operated there during the summer.
Steffler said a properly designed
centre would allow Wingham to
benefit from tourism economic
spinoff. She reported the Friends of
the Museum have funds available for
the project and the group has
suggested a carpenter to carry out the
work.
Council, however, has faced this
kind of suggestion before when
funds were made available to repair
part of the cemetery south of Blyth.
Council deemed that projects on
municipal property, regardless of
where the funds come from, had to
be completed according to the
municipality's procurement process
which dictates they choose
contractors according to their own
policies.
However, before any project can
be considered, two councillors
wondered how the museum would fit
into the discussion.
Councillor Trevor Seip asked if
there were any other locations that
could be considered.
"There's only really been
discussion about this one [location]
as to where the centre can be," he
said. "From my standpoint, if there
are other places it could go with
similar significance, we should look
at that. We have the public library
where it's got space... not being
used. I don't know what's been
thought of, but I always like to know
the alternatives... I would like to
know if the museum is the right
place for it."
Chambers then reported that
Steffler had been advised the issue
would be moved into
correspondence because of questions
like Seip's.
"There are a lot of unanswered
questions, and we wouldn't be able
to ascertain where to start," she said.
"We have set up a meeting between
Steffler and [Economic
Development Officer Connie
Goodall] this Friday. One of the
concerns from staff is [the Alice
Munro Festival of the Short Story
report] talked about this kind of
project and we know the group is in
talks with Alice's representatives
about the future of the Festival."
Chambers said she wanted to have
all the affected parties involved
when discussing a project like
this to make sure no one was
"Stepping on each other's toes"
Councillor Brock Vodden,
however, felt the library might not be
an ideal location for the project
given the uncertain future of the site.
"If we put something grand in
there, but there's no environment for
it, it's not much of a point," he said.
"There are a lot of answers as to the
future of that building needed."
Vodden also wanted to make sure
whatever was done would be
commensurate with Alice Munro's
achievements, like her win of the
Nobel Prize for Literature.
"Putting something up with the
spare change in our pockets would
be an insult," he said.
Chambers agreed, saying the level
of expectation of staff and service
for the museum needs to be
considered.
"We have basic programming, but,
beyond that, we need to look at that
facility," she said. "We need to bring
that facility up to code"
She went on to say that
accessibility requirements will need
to be a part of that conversation and
what the future goals are for the
museum.
The letter was accepted as
correspondence by council until
further information can be
presented.
