PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2017. From the Minister's Study God's words provide hope for restoration By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel "Restoration" — that is a word we are all acquainted with. We work hard at restoring buildings, vehicles, furniture, the environment, our complexion, our health, relationships, etc. The word, `restoration' implies that things have fallen apart and are in need of repair. But restoring old furniture or buildings or even our relationships is something of a temporary nature. We might restore them today but years from now, they will break down again and need to be restored all over. Thankfully, God's word holds out the hope of a future time in which all things will be restored and that permanently. It is called the "time of restoration of all things" (Acts 3:21). It is a wonderful true hope for those who are trusting in Jesus. The scene was the temple in Jerusalem. Peter and John, two of the disciples who had been with Jesus during His ministry the previous three years, were on their way to the temple to pray. At the gate they met a man who had been lame from birth. He had never been able to walk. He was a regular at the temple gate, begging money in order to sustain himself. Spotting Peter and John he began to entreat them for money, but they had none. Instead they had something much better to give. Peter turned to look at the lame man and said: "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene — walk!" (Acts 3:6). That man was healed immediately and he followed Peter and John into the temple, praising God and leaping for joy. This caused quite a commotion in t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t Living 1 drithan, T"ellatAip Jan. 29: Matt. 5:7-12 PotBless & Annual Congregational Meeting `Beatitudes (B) -` -BE the Blessing" Evangelical Missionary Church "Conquer Series" • purity for MEN: Mon, 7 pm at Huron Chapel, Auburn Small Group • Tuesdays 7:30 pm at G&M Lisle's, Wingham Coffee Break Women's Bible Study • Wed. 10 am at Blyth CRC Youth Group • Wed. 6:30.8:30 pm at Huron Chapel EMC, Auburn 10:30 a.m. - Worship & Sunday School at 308 Blyth Rd. The people were in awe that Peter and John would be involved in such a miracle, but Peter quickly turned everyone's focus from the miracle to the One who had done the miracle, namely Jesus Christ. Peter then went on to explain what this miracle, and I would argue all healing miracles, are intended to demonstrate. All of the Biblical miracles teach us three things about Jesus: 1. Jesus is alive. 2. Jesus is God. 3. Jesus is the Saviour. It had been almost two months since Jesus had died on the cross and many people still believed Him to be dead. Everybody around Jerusalem knew what had happened. Peter said to them, "you disowned the Holy and Righteous One — you put to death the Prince (author) of life — but God raised Him up and we are witnesses and it is through faith in Jesus that this man has been made well" In other words, Jesus, who is truly alive, has the power and the love to heal this man! He is alive and therefore active. As God, He has the power to heal. As Saviour of the world, He has the love and desire to bring about the healing. Sometimes still today Jesus will do a miracle of healing often for the same three purposes to demonstrate the truth to those watching. He is alive! His power to do a miracle demonstrates that He is God because only Jesus, the Prince of life, can do such miracles. Jesus does not promise to do these miracles of healing whenever we want them, but by His own will and initiative He sometimes works them because He is God. This leads us to the main point, namely that Jesus is the Saviour. Having established that Jesus is alive, that He is God, Peter then teaches about Jesus' greater work of being a Saviour. Peter states that though these people had put Jesus to death on a cross, this was actually God's will and plan. Jesus had come to die in order to deal with sin. Sin is the indirect or direct cause x.. BRUSSELS of all of our problems. Indirectly, sin was the cause of this man being lame. Disease and death entered creation when our first parents, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God. God has promised a day in the future that is described here as the time of "restoration of all things." Jesus will restore all things at the end of the age, after His final judgment. At that time there will be no disease, no death, no sin and even a completely Continued on page 17 United Church WORSHIP SERVICE AND SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00 am Bulletin notices: 519-523-4224 blythunitedetcc.on.ca Church bookings: 519-887-6377 Everyone welcome Minister: Rev.
