The Rookies took the men's top
spot and the Ontario Steel squad
(OSS) took the ladies' top spot at the
annual adult broomball tournament
hosted at The Blyth and District
Community Centre over the
weekend.
The tournament saw 24 teams
from as close as Blyth and as far
away as Windsor, Harriston and
Palmerston, participate. The teams
were split evenly between the men's
and ladies' pools and played a grand
2-0 win over Special K in the semi-finals and wins over the
Snipers and the Outlaws in round robin play. The Blues beat out
Windsor 3-2 in the semi-finals and posted wins over the Wildcats
and Renegades in the round robin. (Denny Scott photo)
total of 36 games at the Blyth arena

Sandy Bos, part of the Blyth

tournament went well.

A battle to the end
The Blyth adult broomball tournament was held at the Blyth and District Community Centre
over the weekend and the finals for the ladies' bracket between the OSS and Polar Ice was
anything but a sure thing, taking two overtime periods to find a winner. In the end, OSS posted
a 2-1 win over Polar Ice, taking the tournament championship. (Denny Scott photo)
had a good time."
Teams play for prize money,
winning a little more than their entry
fees if they take the top spot Bos
said, adding the tournaments aren't
really an opportunity for making
money but to make sure players have
something to aim for and something
that gets the word out about the
sport.
The teams involved came from
juvenile, intermediate, elite and
master divisions to play against each
other.
The tournament started with round
robins on Friday night and Saturday
morning.
On the A side of the ladies'
tournament, OSS edged out Polar
Ice 2-1, but it took two overtime
periods. After the two regulation -
time periods, the teams had played
to a 1-1 tie which sent them to
sudden death overtime. The first
overtime, a four -on -four period with
no goalies, didn't find a winner so a
second, three -on -three overtime was
played.
In the semi-finals, the Titans and
Ontario Steel won top spots in their
brackets, earning the right to
proceed to a semi-final competition
which the OSS won 2-0. Twisted
Sisters and Polar Ice met in the
second semi-final game which Polar
Ice took 3-0.
On the `B' side of the ladies'
bracket, the Terminators bested the
Bandits in the finals 2-0 after the
Bandits beat out the Typhoons 1-0 in
the semi-finals and the Terminators
beat the Arctic Blaze 1-0.
In the men's tournament, the
Rookies beat the Blues 1-0 in the
final game. The squads played to a
0-0 tie in regulation, resulting in an
overtime period.
The Blues bested Windsor 3-2 in
the semi-finals to earn their spot in
the finals while the Rookies posted a
2-0 win over Special K to advance.
On the B side of the men's
tournament, the Posse posted a 2-1
win over the Snipers for first place.
The Posse had bested the Renegades
3-0 to earn their berth in the
championship game while the
Snipers blanked the Super Troopers
2-0 to advance.
