County launches
heproud website
As we ring in the New Year, many
have made resolutions and have the
hope of change on their minds.
Volunteers of 2017 International
Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural
Expo are excited that 2017 is finally
here. 2017 means the result of four
years of planning is almost at their
fingertips. Things are exciting but
they are only going to intensify as
we also begin to celebrate IPM,
Canada, and its 150th birthday this
year and launching a new Huron
County website.
Walton has the honour to host the
100th IPM, Canada's premiere
outdoor farm show. The first IPM
occurred in 1913 north of Toronto,
now York Region. Our neighbours,
Perth County, celebrated 100 years
of IPMs in 2013, but World War II
inhibited matches during 1942 to
1945, thus Huron County hosting
the 100th IPM.
The IPM is multiple things
wrapped up into one five-day event.
"The IPM is a plowing competition
in which persons of all ages compete
with horses or tractors being judged
in ten different categories over four
days of competition," says Jacquie
Bishop, Chair of the 2017 IPM. "It is
also a rural business exhibit where
agricultural and local businesses
showcase their products and
services, an educational platform
where students of all ages get to
spend the day learning and
experiencing agriculture. Plus, it's a
tourism showcase, where we get to
show off how great Huron County is
to the tens of thousands of visitors
that will descend over the five-day
event"
With the influx of visitors,
businesses in Huron County will be
able to capitalize on this ripple
effect. The IPM executive
committee will be purchasing
supplies from local businesses some
of these items including wayfinding
signage, landscaping materials and
catering services.
"Visitors will be booking
overnight accommodations, plus
they will explore and experience our
downtowns, restaurants and stores,"
says Bishop. "The economic dollars
that are generated from hosting IPM
2017 easily have the potential to be
over $20 million."
Stay up to date with all the latest
news and information about IPM
2017 and agriculture in Huron
County by visiting the brand-new
website: www.hcproud.com
Launching Monday, Jan. 16, this
website will be showcasing one
agricultural family from each of the
nine municipalities, unveiled each
month leading up to the match.
Being featured together at the Huron
County exhibit during IPM 2017,
these nine families will highlight the
diversity and exceptional quality of
Huron County's agriculture industry.
